About Prison Banned Books week:

Prisons are the largest censors in the United States.
Prisons and jails ban more books than all public schools and libraries combined. Prison Banned Books Week is an annual campaign that shines a light on this widespread censorship and advocates for the rights of incarcerated and detained people to access literature and express themselves freely. In partnership with organizations that champion free expression, the campaign underscores a powerful message: censorship has no place in a democracy.

Raising awareness of this most pervasive practice of censorship in America, the annual Prison Banned Books Week brings together over sixty organizations working for free expression. Independent booksellers, libraries, prison book programs, civil and First Amendment rights organizations and legal advocacy organizations work tirelessly to ensure the free access to information and ideas necessary for a democratic society.

This Prison Banned Books Week, we will be celebrating their work and offer ways to connect with these amazing organizations.

Loving that the hottest ticket in town tonight is our @nycbooksthroughbars fundraiser @bookclubbar organized by @pap_colombia
Wonderful customers are reading though letters we have received from incarcerated people all over the country, and buying books to match their requests.

Let us know if you’d like to host a #books party too!

The good folks at @midwestbooks2p put together this awesome lil poster to include inside of their monthly mailing, which goes to 530 recipients who are incarcerated in various prisons. The poster is a special act of love and solidarity, featuring poems and artwork by Des paired with poems by Champagne, along with information on the Prairieland defendants and their sadistic sentences.

This poster is just one good reason to support your local books-through-bars project—or join or start one—and highlights the beauty and importance of getting written materials to those behind bars.

Another good reason is summed up by Des himself, who emailed this message to pass along to @midwestbooks2p : “Please thank Midwest from me! I do plan on sending them some mail soon. They been super supportive, and we all really appreciated all the books we got from them as well [in the Texas federal prison].”

For those of you who want to make similar posters—or flyers, stickers, zines, buttons, etc.—for your books-thru-bars or other solidarity projects, you can find @desrevol’s art and words freely available on our website at freedes.net, and/or via the free graphics page for “Free Des” on @justseeds website.

SOUP STREET
A memoir by Food Not Bombs co-founder Keith McHenry

You can join me in my journey from the adventures I enjoyed as a child living the wilderness of America's National Parks, the events that inspired me to dedicate my life to ending capital's exploitive system to the founding of Food Not Bombs and the decades of traveling the world preparing and sharing meals.

In Frida Slattery as Herself, Ana Kinsella traces a decades-long relationship between an actress and a director whose lives continually collide. The result is a thoughtful novel about ambition, nostalgia, creative obsession, and the people we can never quite leave behind.
