Before nature documentaries, there were the Bartrams. John and William Bartram were two of America’s most famous naturalists, traveling through the wilderness and recording what they saw along the way. John, a botanist, collected and sent plant specimens to scientists in Europe. His travels stretched from Lake Ontario to Florida and west to the Ohio River—including a journey to Onondaga in 1743. His son, William, continued the tradition of exploration. Traveling through the Southern Appalachians, he documented the plants, landscapes, and people he encountered—including a meeting with the Cherokee chief Little Carpenter on a trail in 1776. Their observations helped expand the world’s understanding of North America’s natural environment. 🍃📕 Discover more stories like this in Great Rivers.
