YAYYYYY… drum roll… here’s to the start of Shelf Life!!!! :D

Thank you so much for all your interest in our experiment!!! We received around 90 applications and spent a long time combing through all your applications. We originally planned for 8 residents over 2 months. Then — because of overwhelming response — Sarah from Bricolage very kindly cleared more shelves for us, so now we have 20 shelves shared amongst 24 residents over 3 months!!!!!

Shelf Life feels special because it is really about the people who are stepping up to contribute to public life, but also about the partners who are opening up their shops and allowing this experiment to take root. So, two little anecdotes:

At Bricolage, Sarah told us that she’s STILL playing the 2010s classic Tiny Tower — where people of many different professions live together in a tower you care for and nurture, each personality contributing to the grand whole of the experience. & at Comics World, Jackmond told us that he used to be a school teacher before eventually taking over the shop. It also turns out that Comics World is turning 39 this year — only 6 years younger than Changi Airport????? Which is insane…

Both stories feel really important to the sensibility of Shelf Life: people transmuting something personal about themselves into a place that others can enter, encounter, and slowly become part of.

Can we imagine our relationships to people and places as something more integrated, more tightly woven, less transient because of what we each contribute? Can we create formats of public life that are rooted in places that last? Can individual contributions to a shared place help strangers become neighbours?

Thanks to our Shelf Life residents, new little apartments of interiority have been formed in our city :D Housed in these shelves are objects, stories, archives, obsessions, and invitations — come sit around, browse the shelves, try the interactive activities, meet the residents, and get to know them better!!!!!!

LET’S HELP MAKE SINGAPORE A MORE ALIVE PLACE TO BE! Here are our first Shelf Life residents!!!! :D
