I found a hidden creative gem in Westchester.

Tucked inside Cedar Lane Town Park in Ossining, Cedar Lane Arts Center is a community art space offering classes and workshops for people of all ages.

But this property has a surprising history. Built in 1923 as the estate of Rush Kress, whose family was behind the famous Kress five-and-dime stores, it later became a recreation and rehabilitation facility for wounded veterans.

Today, the former estate is home to an arts center, community garden, and composting program. The garden even sits where the estate’s former swimming pool once stood.

Cedar Lane Arts Center is also one of nearly 50 NYSERDA Experience Clean Heat sites across New York State.

Would you have guessed this was once a private estate? Yes or no?
