Meet @aucklandpuppyrescue - a completely volunteer-run puppy rescue that’s found more than 1,000 forever homes since 2012 🐶

APR is entirely community-funded, working alongside pounds, shelters, the public and other rescues around the country to help puppies who need somewhere safe to go. But it’s not just about getting a puppy out of a tough situation - it’s about giving each one the health care, training and socialisation they need to actually thrive in their new home.

Here’s something that surprised us... APR has no shelter at all. Every puppy lives with a foster family, learning their personality, quirks and needs long before they’re matched with their forever home. Behind every adoption is a small volunteer team coordinating fosters, arranging vet care, fundraising and supporting families the whole way through.

If you’d like to foster, adopt, donate, or lend your time or skills, head over to @aucklandpuppyrescue or check out www.aucklandpuppyrescue.com to find out more.

Have you ever fostered or perhaps thought about it? Let us know below! 🐶

A big thank you to @fluffybums_petcare for nominating @aucklandpuppyrescue for this month’s charity feature - and to everyone else who sent in a nomination. Each month, NZ Pets highlights a different Kiwi charity doing great work for animals in need. Keep an eye on our Stories for the next Call for Nominations.

Finding a lump on your dog or cat can be worrying. While many are harmless, some unfortunately are not, which is why knowing what to do makes all the difference.

Dr Danielle of @wellbyvets shares the gold standard for what to do when you find a lump on your pet.

* Note the location: Write down exactly where it is on your pet.
* Measure the lump: Use a ruler to record its size in millimetres.
* Take a photo: A clear photo helps monitor changes over time.
* Check for other lumps: Use your fingertips to gently feel for any other lumps.
* Book a vet check: EVERY new lump should be examined by a vet for proper diagnostics.

Don’t “wait and see”. Acting early often leads to better outcomes.

📍 Free Resource: Download free Pet Body Maps at wellbyvets.com (under the Free Resources tab) to easily track any lumps or changes.

The pet supplement market is growing fast, with many products making big claims. So what’s actually effective and worth your money?

Dr Danielle of @wellbyvets shares where to start.

You don’t need a cupboard full of supplements to be a great pet parent. But a few carefully selected options can be a fantastic way to support their overall health! Just remember: supplements complement, but never replace, a balanced diet, exercise, and routine vet care.

If your pet has a specific health issue or known breed risks, your vet can build a tailored plan. And if your pet is healthy and you’re looking for everyday support, start with these two evidence-based options:
🐟 Omega-3s (EPA/DHA): Powerful anti-inflammatory support for joints, coat, and brain health.
💊 Pre & Probiotics: Nourishes the gut microbiome to aid digestion and immune function.
💡Pro Tip: Introduce one new supplement at a time, at least 7 days apart. This gives your pet’s system time to adjust!

Thank you to @maxieshibainu for suggesting this topic for Dr Danielle to discuss. We are always open to receiving future topic suggestions - just pop them in the comments below OR send through a DM.

Christchurch has an incredible not-for-profit rescue doing amazing work for Kiwi rabbits with nowhere else to go 🐰 @chchrabbitrescue - saving the world, one bun at a time.

Since 2021, they’ve stepped in for a steady stream of “found rabbit” posts with no home in sight. Every rabbit is vaccinated, desexed and microchipped, with potential homes carefully vetted before adoption. They also provide any vet care a rabbit needs to live comfortably - from dental work through to lifelong care for rabbits who can’t be rehomed.

Here’s something that surprised us... all of their rabbits live in foster homes, not a shelter. That means every bunny is truly known - quirks and all - long before they find their forever home.

Right now, @chchrabbitrescue is in need of:
🐾 Burgess rabbit pellets
🐾 Bath mats, blankets & towels
🐾 Newspaper
🐾 Donations

If you’re able to help with supplies or a donation, head over to @chchrabbitrescue or check out www.crr.org.nz to find out more.

As pet parents, we often reach into our bathroom cupboard during a pet emergency. But the reality is, human first aid kits often fall short for our pets.

Dr Danielle of @wellbyvets breaks down what should actually be in your pet’s first aid kit.

Pet First Aid Essentials:
🐾 Wound Care: Styptic stick (to stop minor bleeds), saline, antiseptic wipes & gloves
🐾 Pet-safe Bandaging: Non-adhesive dressing, padded & conforming bandages, self-adhesive vet wrap, medical tape & bandage scissors
🐾 Tools: Tweezers, tick remover, thermometer & lubricant
🐾 Emergency & Safety: Thermal blanket, ice pack, spare leash & muzzle

Properly applied first aid helps keep your pet safe and comfortable until they see a vet - but it should never replace professional care.

Skip the DIY hassle: The Well by Vets Pet First Aid Kit contains 45 vet-approved essentials. Available at wellbyvets.com

Pain in pets isn’t always obvious. Because animals naturally mask discomfort, subtle behaviour changes are often your best warning sign.

Recognising these early warning signs can help you get your pet the care they need sooner:
* Subdued mood: Hiding, quieter than usual, or withdrawing
* Targeted grooming: Licking or chewing a specific spot
* Vocalising: Whining, yelping, meowing or purring (cats may purr to self-soothe when stressed or in pain)
* Restlessness: Trembling, panting, or unable to settle
* Behavioural changes: Sudden aggression like snarling or nipping

You know your pet best: If your gut tells you something is off - even if it’s not on this list - trust your instinct. A vet check-up can help identify the cause early and prevents smaller issues from becoming bigger ones.

Be prepared at home: Dr Danielle of Well by Vets has written a book, Pet Illnesses & Emergencies, which can help you spot red flags early and understand what steps to take next.

🐾 PAWGUST is back this August!

Looking for a reason to get out and about this winter? @guidedogspawgust is a nationwide walking and running challenge supporting @blindlowvisionnz.

Whether you complete 60km, 100km or 125km throughout August, every step helps raise funds for future guide dogs. And the best part? You don’t even need a dog to take part - but let’s be honest, it’s more fun with a dog!

Here’s something that surprised us... It takes around $175,000 to raise, train and support a guide dog throughout its working life. Even more incredibly, the Guide Dog programme receives no government funding, relying entirely on the generosity of New Zealanders to continue changing lives.

If you’d like to take on the challenge or support this incredible cause, head over to @guidedogspawgust or @blindlowvisionnz, and click the bio link to find out more.

Will you be taking part in PAWGUST 2026? Let us know below!
