@nzdesignweek was launching a new, multi-discipline design awards initiative as part of its annual programme, and I was brought on to create the brand identity. I developed a scalable system that gives the awards a distinct voice while remaining anchored to the core NZDW brand. Utilising a single weight of the Söhne type family (@klim_type_foundry)with offset layouts, the framework offers a striking, energetic structure built to adapt across the full breadth of disciplines, categories, and touchpoints. Fluid, undulating gradients were introduced to create a memorable point of difference from NZDW’s block colours while maintaining seamless brand attribution. The details that make a space work. At GP+ME, our cabinetry extended well beyond the reception. We manufactured the softly curved water station, tiled coffee tables, lift-up bed cabinetry, doctor’s room cabinetry, kitchen areas and practical storage throughout the practice. Projects like this push our manufacturing beyond the familiar, giving us the opportunity to develop new skills, solve challenges and work with different forms and materials. And those skills come straight back into the kitchens and interiors we design and manufacture every day. “I’m a handshake kind of girl” The 2009-10 recession and a difficult divorce cost Queenstown interior designer Carmen Hubber her home and studio and left her nearly $200,000 in debt. She could have declared bankruptcy and walked away from those commitments, instead, she drew inspiration from her father (who never quit and reinvented his businesses many times), and her aunt (who took a decade to pay back creditors after her little mini-mart went under), and determined she would pay back every cent. Five years later she’d done just that, coming out the other side not just intact but clear-eyed about who she was, what she was capable of, and what her future would hold. That future is manifested in part by our recording location: Carmen and partner Jason’s new property, a sprawling place close to Queenstown’s Arrow Junction, with breathtaking views of the Remarkables and Coronet Peak, a waterfall(!), her new studio and showrooms, as well as 650 square metres of garaging. We cover her early years in Invercargill and Christchurch, the psychology of putting two people’s dreams into one home, the ten years of boring greys that nearly did her head in, what it means to have clients trust you with multiple homes over decades, why the motorbikes are her meditation, and what it feels like to finally have a showroom that’s truly hers. 🎙️ The Unmaking S01E08: Carmen Hubber - Designer. It’s taken me a couple of days to take it all in but I’m pleased to say that I was announced as the Emerging Designer winner at the @nzinteriorawards last Thursday!! Thank-you to @jen.jones.life and the @nzdesignweek team for pulling off such an energetic awards program. It was a truly wild ride, and a really fun evening! Thank-you as well to @amandaharkness1 and all the judges for both your time and generous words! I’m cementing your citation to the grid to mark this moment in time.. “Natalie is one of those rare designers who is able to find beauty and creativity in the most prosaic of settings. She engages purposefully with the realities of domestic life, crafting residential environments that are thoughtful, carefully resolved and deeply personal. Her work is both cerebral and colourful, and always underpinned by a sense of vitality and a cunning wit. An emerging practitioner, mother and spatial provocateur with a generous joie de vivre, Natalie is one to watch.” As I mentioned in my presentation, it feels as though we are all emerging, I mean, who here is done yet? To me it’s both an unfurling, a state of aliveness, but it’s also incomplete, having not yet fully arrived. It requires being curious, constantly. Life, both professionally and personally, feels like a series of tweaks, meanderings, failings, pleasures, inquiries, questions - book marked with martinis, meals, making friends and materialising interior dreams for a marvellous few.  I can’t imagine it any other way, and I absolutely can’t wait for all the interiors to come! Congratulations to all the winners and finalists on the night, there are so many gorgeous people and projects working hard to make our interior environments more pleasurable and playful, and I feel so excited about our collective, colourful creativity! xx
