Art Matters: inside Basquiat’s studio
A rare conversation with Jean-Michel Basquiat’s former assistant and close friend.

Stephen Torton is a multidisciplinary artist and living legend who has collaborated with Jim Jarmusch, Rammellzee, Madonna, John Lurie, and The Lounge Lizards. In the early 1980s, he was more than Jean-Michel Basquiat’s assistant—he was a confidant, creative partner, and the subject of several of Basquiat’s iconic paintings.

In this new Art Matters, host Kendell Geers sits down with Torton for an unfiltered, behind-the-scenes conversation about life inside Basquiat’s studio at the very moment he was rewriting the rules of contemporary art and redefining street culture.

You’ve heard the myths, read the books, and seen the films but only Stephen Torton was there. And only he can tell the story of what really happened. That’s why Art Matters.

A moment to remember.

Last week, TheMerode had the privilege of hosting Marina Abramović and @kendell_geers for a very special talk about why Art Matters, a profound exchange on art, resilience, and the human spirit.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Marina and Kendell for their inspiring presence, to our members for joining us in such numbers, and to all who contributed to the remarkable atmosphere of the night.

The evening continued with a private dinner at CIAO, TheMerode’s Italian restaurant, where dialogue and conviviality carried on late into the night.

An historic encounter, and a milestone in the cultural life of our club.

Pangea Proxima is a possible future supercontinent configuration. Consistent with the supercontinent cycle, Pangea Proxima could form within the next 250 million years. This potential configuration, hypothesized by Christopher Scotese in November 1982, earned its name from its similarity to the previous Pangea supercontinent.

The „continental drift“ is One of the unstoppable forces that creates our planet and lives. It came to mind in a recent interview with @dessauory . As an ode to this shifting energy I have dedicated the series “ Drifting destination “ to this phenomenon. Because I believe our human drift / shift should be guided by trust, giving and care. The material arrived at my studio as a gift of @hotermansmarc who was introduced to me by a concept of @o.v.project in 2024.
All elements added up and became the intro for my next Solo exhibition “ The fifth season “ @tatjanapietersgallery in June.
