‘Cause It’s Fan-Tas-Tic: Revisiting Slum Village’s Imperfect Masterpiece 📁

More than 25 years later, despite multiple lineup changes and significant losses within the group, the legacy and impact of @officialslumvillage’s debut album Fantastic, Vol. 2 remain undeniable: especially within the late J Dilla’s sprawling catalogue. But does Fan-Tas-Tic, Vol. 1 (the album that paved the way for that landmark release) deserve just as much love?

For a good portion of 1996, Slum Village worked on their unofficial debut album Fan-Tas-Tic, Vol. 1. It’s an album that, despite its imperfections, still somehow came out perfect. Released independently on cassette the following year, and sold primarily around the city of Detroit, the album is the result of suppressed tension between the group and experimental techniques that may pass the average listener by.

In a 2023 Slum Village interview with the podcast Questlove Supreme, T3 would even admit that the recording process was all over the place: “We did it in a week because we had... all these songs just from the 10 years of being together.” You can hear the rough mic quality in moments like “This Beat”, which was primarily a musical argument between T3 and Jay, put together over a Keni Burke-sampled banger.

Standout track “Players” houses an extremely intentional sample flip, manipulating the harmonious vocals of The Singers Unlimited’s “Clair” as if it’s saying the song’s title, even ad-libbing specifically around it—the final result is a song specifically targeting a fellow Detroit group, 5 Elementz, as biters.

Equally, moments such as the respective “Pregnant” interludes from T3 and Baatin, as well as Jay Dee’s funky “Give This Nigga”, make enough room for the members to showcase their uniqueness on the mic.

There’s something about a UK rapper stepping on a US beat it just means something.

Back in the 90s, over in United States hip hop flipped the script, people weren’t just making new sounds they were reworking them. Freestyles over other people’s instrumentals, radio sets, mixtapes taking a beat and giving it a whole new life and that became the blueprint.

Then the sound travelled across the seas and came to the United Kingdom. And the UK didn’t just copy it we translated it. Suddenly you’ve got man jumping on G-Unit beats, The Alchemist instrumentals, Mobb Deep energy, The LOX soul but telling our stories giving you that same beats but different pain vibe.

That’s where it got cold when artists like Nines, Giggs, Blade Brown, Potter Payper and many more stepped on those instrumentals, it wasn’t just bars it became musical therapy, pouring real life into already legendary sounds. The maddest part was we didn’t care if we heard the beat before. If anything, that made it better because you already knew the rhythm, so all you had to do was feel the story.

Even today, samples still run the game some man touch them and it doesn’t land, while others flip it so crazy you forget the original ever existed.

Reuben Vincent on 9th Wonder, Marvin Gaye Samples and the Making of His Album 📁

Born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, @reubenvincent caught the music bug early. Now 24 with over ten years in the game, he’s built a run of standout mixtapes—from early releases to the widely praised Myers Park with 9th Wonder’s Jamla Records. Naturally, it only made sense for them to link up for a whole project.

“The process with 9th Wonder was incredibly smooth, thanks to our synergy. The first song we worked on, ‘Issa Dee’ inspired the album’s title. After I recorded it at home, 9th texted me, ‘Welcome Home, Reuben Vincent,’ which solidified the title.”

Filled with lush soul samples, songs built around classic African American cinema and standout features from the likes of Ab-Soul, Raheem DaVaughn, Wale and more. If you’ve ever wanted a quick trip to North Carolina: forget the flight or petrol tank, just press play on this project.

“We recorded around 70 songs because everything was flowing so well. My daily routine involved sleeping in the studio, waking up at 6 AM to pray and read my Bible, then hitting the gym. By noon, 9th would arrive, listen to samples, create beats and I’d record in another room. This daily routine eventually led to us producing engaging Instagram videos, as our work was consistently on point.”

We made this album, around love and respect. No egos, no pressure and no lies. If everyone in the room, wasn’t feeling it. It wasn’t cutting it. I had a few faux pas ideas. The guys quickly let me know were 😩. By either saying 😶 or just ignoring it! 🤣
When it was it though, pure gun fingers and reloads! 💥💥💥💥💥
Awwwwwww, I loved every single second of this process! Can’t wait to perform this for you all! 🥰🙏🏾💃🏾

Big up the one and only @ernestsimons for capturing some special, behind the scenes moments, when you swipe 👈🏾. There aren’t many. So these are golddust. 👑👑👑👑👑
