35 Years Later: Remembering the 1991 Tunnel Fire On Sunday, October 18, our community gathered at Gateway Garden to remember the 25 lives lost and honor the families, survivors, and neighbors forever changed by the 1991 tunnel fire. Thank you to the @nhillscommunity for hosting this meaningful commemoration. Speakers included Assistant Chief Keith May of @berkeleyfiredept, Oakland Fire Chief Damon Covington, Oakland Councilmembers Unger and Ramachandran , Oakland’s Office of Emergency Management, Oakland Firesafe Council, and @united_policyholders, among others. Thirty-five years later, we honor those we lost by continuing to educate our community, reduce wildfire risk, and strengthen neighborhood preparedness. We remember. We learn. We continue to prepare.

Los Bomberos de Oakland will be at this year’s Día de Los Muertos festival with our altar honoring Firefighters who have passed. A tribute to their life, their service, and the friends & families who carry their memory forward. Rooted in our heritage, Día de Muertos reminds us that our connection to those we love continues beyond death. Through ofrendas, photographs, and shared stories, we welcome their memory and pass their legacy to the next generation. In the Fire Service, we inherit more than a badge. We inherit the responsibility to remember those who came before us and carry their commitment to others into every call, every firehouse, and every neighborhood we serve. Our altar brings these traditions together in the heart of Oakland, Fruitvale. A community whose strength lives in its people, its cultures, and its care for one another. Join us November 1st to remember, share a story, and honor those whose lives remains part of our city. Siempre presentes. Nunca olvidados. #OaklandBomberos #díadelosmuertos #Oakland #oaklandfire #NuestraCultura @a2zmediagroup @the_unity_council @diaoakland @oaklandfireca

This morning I joined Fredricka Newton, community leaders, and the incredible students of Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary in West Oakland to serve free breakfast in honor of the Black Panther Party’s 60th anniversary. In January 1969, the Party started the Free Breakfast for School Children Program right here in Oakland to fight childhood hunger and support education and health. Back then, I was a student at Mills College raising my two young sons and volunteering at the Party’s Community Learning Center. That experience taught me what public service really means. You show up, you listen, and you do the work. To our MLK Jr. elementary students: this rich history belongs to you. You are Oakland's future. Thank you Principal Dr. Groves, Councilmember Carroll Fife, Superintendent Denise Saddler, Pastor Zach Carey, Muralist Refa one, our Oakland firefighters, and Kai XR for supporting today's free breakfast. And to our Black Panther Party elders: happy 60th anniversary. Thank you for showing us what people can do when they come together to love their community.

Two weeks after the devastating 3-alarm fire on September 24th, Random Acts was honored to help reunite the crews of Engine 18 and Truck 6 with two of the victims who lost everything. Reconnections like this remind us how important community support is—not only for those rebuilding their lives, but for the first responders who give their all. It’s the little things that mean the most. A heartfelt thank you to every crew member who fought this fire and works tirelessly to keep our community safe! ❤️🚒 Special thank youn to SJFF Burn Foundation who helped out.
