BACK TO GREAT IFE — 39 YEARS LATER! 🎓

Returning to Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, 39 years after graduating with a First Class in Civil Engineering in 1987 was both nostalgic and deeply fulfilling. Great Ife helped shape my intellectual curiosity, ambitions and lifelong commitment to excellence.

I made the trip especially to support my dear friend, Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, who delivered the keynote address during the University’s 65th anniversary celebrations. I was honoured to meet the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire; the Provost of the Postgraduate College, Professor Adetokunbo Ilesanmi, Tunji’s childhood friend; and several members of the University’s senior leadership.

Tunji’s message was as compelling as it was timely: research must help society question assumptions, follow evidence and correct its course. He challenged universities to open the gates of research wider through digital learning and flexible access; test indigenous knowledge and even difficult chapters of our history with scientific rigour; and take discoveries beyond campus to solve real problems. He also urged Great Ife alumni to multiply their support for research, mentorship and innovation.

Most inspiringly, he matched his words with action. Through the Tunji Olowolafe Foundation, he committed support for solar power, virtual learning facilities, research seed funding and training to help the College secure international grants.

Reflecting on my own journey from Great Ife to Oxford, Wall Street and Afrinvest, I was reminded how profoundly quality education can transform a life. Our generation benefited immensely from these institutions. We owe it to the next generation to help them flourish.

Congratulations to Tunji and the entire Great Ife community!

Great Ife! For Learning and Culture! ❤️

YOU CLOSE GATE AGAINST A STUDENT WHO TREKKED THROUGH HELL TO REACH YOUR EXAM HALL. ARE YOU NOT WICKED?

Let's tell ourselves the truth.

A Post UTME candidate leaves Sokoto, Bauchi, Port Harcourt, Enugu at 4am to write exam in Ife, Lagos, Abuja, Zaria.

He enters Nigeria's terrible roads.
He enters Nigeria's lawless transport system handed over to Agberos and hooligans by politicians in power.
He is extorted at every motor park by criminals collecting illegal tolls.
He faces fuel price x3, fare price x5, no government regulation.
He faces insecurity - kidnappers on the highway.
He faces a barbaric system where even if someone wants to help him for free, Agberos will chase that helper away.

He finally gets to your gate by 8:15am for an 8:00am exam - sweating, shaking, hungry.

And you, a lecturer, a supposed father and mother, you lock gate against him. You say "You are late. Go back."

Go back to where? You just destroyed a destiny to prove you have power.

Is wickedness now a criteria for academic excellence?

A society with peculiar problem must have peculiar solutions!

You cannot copy British strictness in a country where even moving from Iwo Road to Ife is war. You live in Nigeria. Don't pretend you don't know.

But OAU showed us another way in 2026 Post UTME!

In OAU Ile-Ife this 2026, no student was turned back.

I saw it. From 8am to 4pm, OAU did batch by batch.

You come early? You write early.
You come late due to transport? "Join the next batch."
40 minutes exam, different questions for each batch. No leakage. No cheating. No crying at the gate.

First come, first served. Discipline without wickedness. Organisation without sadism.

And guess what? No student cried. Parents were happy. Even observers commended them.

This is the difference between giving exams to politicians and sadists who enjoy punishing children to show power, and giving it to competent professionals who want to restore dignity.

OAU has proved: You can be disciplined without being wicked.

Let OAU's method become the national standard for all universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

Entrust Nigeria's future to people with competence and compassion, not otherwise.

A grant of $5M, funded by the Gates Foundation, has been secured by a researcher from OAU.

The researcher, Professor Ibraheem O. Awowole, is set to implement an initiative aimed at reducing maternal deaths in Nigeria by 60%.

The initiative, which is to run for 3 years, is aimed at strengthening early identification of pregnancy-related risks and improving access to appropriate interventions.
