Story Time: A NOLA Reunion in the Skies
End of this month marks 20 years since Hurricane Katrina—(that’s a whole post on its own). Because of that storm, I ended up in the airline industry. If you know me, you know my girl Meli Nola—my sister from another mister—is a flight attendant, and we even worked at the same airline. Folks like Titania Azucena Bautista (Mid-City girl, now a Supervisor at MSY), Eris M., and others from New Orleans are also in the industry. NOLA folks are everywhere!
Now I’ve met a lot of New Orleanians while flying, but what happened in June? Wild.
I was on a 4-day trip with the BEST crew—laughing every leg. On the last day, our lead flight attendant changed. Courtney and I grabbed Starbucks before boarding (early van time = survival mode), and when we met the new F1, I said, “Are you from New Orleans?”
She said, “Yes, why?”
I said, “Because I’m from Mid-City. Raised on South Murat.”
She paused… then said, “Wait, what address?”
Y’all… she lived ONE house down from me growing up. Her dad had redone the house, and once she described the brick porch, it all clicked. Her name is Alice Rhodes—and we realized we were childhood neighbors. Our dads used to sit outside and chat for hours. I showed her an old pic of my dad and she said, “Mr. Charlie! He used to hand out toys instead of candy for Halloween!”
We started naming folks: Shalena Washington, Trevena Antill, my cousin Christina Maize—turns out, she still sees Shalena for her teeth cleanings!
Crazy part? Her dad passed in Dec. 2023. Mine in April 2024. We both said it felt like our dads reuniting in heaven, sending us this moment on Earth.
That night, I even talked to her sister. We hadn’t seen each other since summer 2005—Katrina summer. 🌀
NOLA is that “big city, small town” vibe. Not 6 degrees of separation—more like 3. And the airline world? Same way.
Sharing a few pics:
* My old house (blue screened porch)
* Hers (yellow, with a pink one between)
* Our parents (RIP)
* Me & my dad on our porch
* Us at work the day we reconnected 💙
Still looking for childhood pics of us together—but even without them, this full-circle moment was everything
