It is an incredible honor to give the premiere of composer Oscar Bettison’s Four Songs from The Light of Lesser Days with Talea Ensemble in January 2027! The music and text are exquisite and terrifyingly sad. I hope you will join us in NYC! Thank you, @obettison , for asking me to sing your songs.

(I’ve been working on the first movement today and my favorite new word: rhizome. ❤️)

💀 O' Death by @obettison

One of the most incredible and beautiful pieces I have ever played. A monumental masterpiece. Check the whole video in bio where we perform the I, II, III, and VII movements.

These are some excerpts from movement
II. Bone Chapel.
Bone Chapel is an 18th-century chapel in Évora, Portugal, literally constructed from human bones. Above the door, an inscription reads:

“We bones that are here, for you bones we wait”

Thanks again to @obettison, and to @ensembleklang for accompanying and guiding us on this journey.

Episode 79: Oscar Bettison

In this episode, I chat with Professor Oscar Bettison. Oscar Bettison is a British-American composer and faculty member in the Composition Department at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he has taught since 2009. Described as possessing “an unconventional lyricism and a menacing beauty,” his music bridges the worlds of concert music and beyond, and has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, and broadcast on radio and television across the U.S., Britain, Australia, the Netherlands, and Brazil. He has received commissions from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Alarm Will Sound, MusikFabrik, Bang on a Can All-Stars, and So Percussion, among others, and his honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Royal Philharmonic Society Prize, and the inaugural BBC Young Composer of the Year Prize. He holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University and studied previously at the Royal College of Music in London and the Royal Conservatorium of The Hague.

It's been a long time in the making, but this week I presented my thesis on Kpop and Capitalism, and now (pending a little bit of paper work and the final submission of some documents) I am pleased to announce that I am Doctor Pellegrino, D.M.A. in Music Composition from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins.
When I told my father that I'd finally be done with school, he said I've been a student for about 25 years, won't it be strange when it's over? But seeing as I'm still "in school" at NYU, thankfully, the learning never ends.
Immensely thankful to my teacher and advisors, especially Dr. Bettison for mentoring me all these years (since 2016 as a Master's student!), to my parents for supporting me and my education, and to my wife @xuyan394 for putting up with me and my crazy work hours these past few months.
Also shout-out to @leesle_official & @teterotsalon , it felt so special to discuss Korean pop music in a hanbok style suit!
