Two architects. Two very different careers. Somehow, the same escape plan. 🌊

I asked Marco Piva and Paolo Brescia a simple question:

“If you weren’t an architect, what would you be?”

Marco Piva: a sailor.
Paolo Brescia: a film director… or a sailor.

Maybe after years of buildings, clients, deadlines and meetings, freedom starts to look a little like the open sea.

This is IF NOT ARCHITECTURE…, a new Unfiltered Dialogues series where I ask architects and creatives who they might have become if they had never chosen the profession we know them for.

Some answers are predictable. Some are definitely not.

So, if not your current profession, what would you be?

The previous House of a Friend post focused on the street facade and the brick lattice exterior. This exploded axonometric shows the spatial logic layer by layer, so the caption should focus on that.
Every floor, a different world. The same house.
This exploded axonometric of The House of a Friend reveals what the facade keeps quiet. Ground floor: a semi-public courtyard, service spaces, and a stairwell that draws air upward through the building. First floor: the living quarters, organised around a circular void at the centre. Second floor: the private bedroom level, with a terrace opening to the sky. Roof: solar panels and a domed skylight, the lungs of the whole system.
A 121 m² plot in the historic fabric of Yazd. Three floors of careful decisions stacked one on top of the other.
Project: The House of a Friend
Architect: Ali Ahmadi @alii_ah.mdi
Building engineer: Alireza Nazeri @ein_noon
Studio: AAVA Studio
Location: Yazd, Iran

What if architecture begins with listening, not designing?

What if the people who inhabit a place are not just users of architecture, but part of what gives it meaning?

I sat down with @obr.paolobrescia , co-founder of @obr.eu , for a conversation that goes far beyond buildings.

We talked about architecture, communities, participation, memory, responsibility, and what the role of an architect should really be today.

Not just the projects.
The thinking behind them.

“What do you know about India?”
“Nothing.”

That was the first exchange between Paolo Brescia and Rajeev Lunkad, and it is the reason Paolo got the project.

As an Indian architect working in Milan, this landed hard. We are used to foreign architects arriving with the answer already written. This one arrived with nothing, and that was the qualification.

Full conversation drops soon. Stay tuned and follow @unfiltered.dialogues

Milan needs less “building” and more “architecture”

I gave Paolo Brescia from @obr.eu one fill in the blank about the city he has built in for twenty five years. He did not pause.

His argument is not that Milan builds too much. It is that a building and a piece of architecture are not the same object.

And then he named what Milan actually does well. The city’s intelligence is in its transitions, not its towers.

Five years here as an outsider and I have never heard a Milanese architect say it that plainly.

😮 Did you know that in Pietrasanta, Tuscany, Italy, inside the former municipal market designed by Tito Salvatori and recently redeveloped by @obr.eu , a new museum dedicated to Igor Mitoraj has opened?

1/3: Leheriya is a collaborative project with the Italian firm OBR leading the concept design. It promises a visually striking and sustainable building with a ceramic and metal screen façade patterned in the traditional colorful tye and dye pattern called Leheriya, meaning waves or wavy.
The office complexes comprises four towers with interconnecting bridges at its cores. The entire floor plates of its offices are designed to be enveloped with the Leheriya screen on all sides, opening views to the outside while being screened from the solar
glare. Its cantilevered and angular projections complement the views of the airport and runway on its south.
The building podium is treated with a detailed complex pattern in a single stone material in varying finishes and lends a minimalist formal character to the building and is a perfect setting for the dramatic colorful façade to follow above.

Status: Ongoing
Client: KGK Infrastructure

I wish more architects knew this.

Losing a competition does not mean you are worse. Sometimes your project was just too innovative for that jury. But every entry leaves you with research that you keep, and it always comes back. Paolo Brescia of @obr.eu built his whole studio on that mindset.

It is also why I serve as International Representative for @krystaldesignaward . Competitions are how young architects get seen.

So here is your sign: the Krystal Design Award Graduation Competition is officially open for submissions. Register at krystaldesignaward.com

Follow @unfiltered.dialogues for the full episode.
