Hello all,

We deeply regret that APA VOICE and its member organizations are canceling tomorrow’s Brooklyn candidate forum for Senate District 17 & Assembly District 49 at Homecrest Community Services in South Brooklyn at 5 PM. All the confirmed candidates, except for Assembly District 49 candidate Joyce Xie, had last-minute scheduling conflicts and chose to not attend in the days leading up to the candidate forum. Some candidates have filmed video interviews, which will be shared digitally on our partners’ respective platforms within the next week.

As a coalition, we have been preparing for this event for months, with over 200 expected attendees, representing nine organizations serving AAPI communities in Brooklyn and the rest of the city. We are deeply disappointed and sorry for the inconvenience. We hope to mobilize our community again soon, with renewed energy for future forums.

In the upcoming weeks, our coalition will continue to promote civic education and engagement among our AAPI communities. We hope future candidates will honor their commitments and prioritize our communities.

If you are interested in being civically engaged in your community, APA VOICE is also hosting phone banking and canvassing sessions to Get Out The Vote. Please feel free to sign up at https://www.mobilize.us/minkwongotv/.

OCA-NJ hosted again our 4- Chapters annual picnic at Van Saun County Park on Sunday, October 4. Despite the possibility of rain, 40 members and friends from OCA-NJ, OCA-NY, OCA-WHV, and OCA-LI came together to enjoy a wonderful afternoon filled with fun, friendship, and camaraderie.
One of the highlights of the picnic was a special presentation by Dr. Kit Cheung, educator, author, and researcher known for her work on classical Mahjong, who shared the history of Mahjong and taught our members how to play the game. Tables were set up for everyone to practice and enjoy Mahjong together, and many members had a great time learning, playing, and socializing.
We were also honored to have the Bergen County Commissioner Mary Amoroso stop by to greet our group and welcome us to Bergen County. Ludi Hughes, Bergen County Community Relations Specialist and last year’s OCA-NJ Holiday Ball Honoree, was also there and reminded everyone about the importance of participating in the upcoming fall election.
Overall, our annual picnic was a huge success. It was a wonderful opportunity for our members and friends to relax, connect, and enjoy each other’s company. The laughter, friendship, and camaraderie made the day truly special, and we look forward to another memorable picnic next year!
