🇺🇸 𝐋𝐨𝐮𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐭𝐨 𝐃𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐲𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐞! 🇬🇧

Today I had the pleasure of welcoming Jacob Kraemer and his family from Pinola Conservancy in Louisiana, USA, to OC Aviary here in the UK.

Jacob has a huge amount of experience in specialist aviculture, so it was a brilliant opportunity to spend the day showing him around our facilities and discussing the different projects we’re developing.

Much of the day was spent where the best conversations usually happen — stood in front of aviaries talking birds!

We covered everything from passerine and shorebird husbandry, breeding techniques and aviary design through to incubation, chick rearing, nutrition and the small details that can make such a difference to breeding success. It was particularly valuable to compare experiences with different species and discuss approaches that have worked on both sides of the Atlantic.

For me, this kind of knowledge exchange is an incredibly important part of conservation aviculture. There is a huge amount we can learn from people and institutions around the world who have spent years refining techniques for maintaining and breeding specialist species.

A massive thank you to Jacob and his family for making the trip and spending the day with me. Hopefully this is the start of plenty more collaboration and exchange of knowledge between OC Aviary and Pinola Conservancy in the future.

It’s not every day Louisiana comes to Derbyshire! 🇺🇸🦅🇬🇧

Good afternoon,

We are delighted at The Dodo Park to announce a distinguished & exceptional addition to our facilities, represented by a female Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, scientifically known as Pterocles alchata, which constitutes a singular exception as the only avian specimen outside the Columbidae family within our principal research scope, featuring an extraordinary & rare color mutation deserving of rigorous scientific documentation,
In alignment with our commitment to rigorous scientific research, we will conduct a comprehensive & advanced genetic analysis of this specimen within the Genome Diversity Program,
I wish you all a wonderful & successful day,
Best regards,
Nasser Bin Mohamed Al-Jbr⁩
