Choosing a college can feel like the biggest decision a teenager will ever make; but for Orthodox Christians, there’s a deeper question at the heart of it all: how can we help our young people stay close to Christ during these formative years? In our newest What’s Your Ministry? reflection, Christopher Chiakulas, founder of Orthodox Christian College Counseling, challenges families to look beyond rankings and résumés to what truly matters; the salvation of the soul. He reminds us that college itself isn’t the enemy of faith; it’s the “lake” where our young people learn to stand firm together, like the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste. OCCC is making a difference in the lives of college-bound students and their families by helping them navigate the college journey. Christopher Chiakulas, founder of Orthodox Christian College Counseling (OCCC) brings faith to the forefront of one of life’s biggest decisions. As a high school and college counselor, Christopher has seen how easy it is for families to get caught up in rankings, applications, and campus tours—often at the expense of a student’s spiritual well-being. This quote is a moving reminder that college, while important, is temporary. What truly matters is whether our young people remain rooted in Christ and connected to the Church during these formative years. Through OCCC, Christopher helps students and their families approach college planning with eternity in mind—making sure their choices not only serve their academic goals, but nourish their spiritual lives as well. We hope this image will inspire families to rethink what success really looks like and encourage students to seek out environments where they can live out their faith fully. Be sure to follow @occollegecounseling and sign up for the OYM Chicago newsletter to stay connected to opportunities that support faith-filled journeys for Orthodox youth across the Chicagoland.
