I set up situations whenever I can to proof my training.

Barrett has a very solid history of leaving dogs alone when we’re out in public, and I’ve put hundreds of hours into that. But context matters.

He’s also a 13-month-old intact male Rottweiler. All those things bring with them emerging instincts and urges.

Everything changes. I’m not assuming that something I taught and proofed extensively when he was younger will automatically look the same as he develops.

So I am deliberately revisiting these things as adolescence changes the picture.

On our own property, I’ve proofed his boundaries around people extensively, but now we’ve got higher stakes, and unfamiliar dogs are going to be tougher.

I also deliberately made this harder. He wasn’t actively playing with me, and I wasn’t asking for obedience within the game—both of those are things we’ve worked over and over.

I wanted to know what I had when the game was completely over and he was simply existing on his property while dogs passed.

His first rep, he failed. I corrected, and he succeeded for the next 2. His only failures after that were simply stepping off the property in small ways, so that first failure was handled in a way that he understood.

He understood not to aggress. He just didn’t fully understand what I really wanted—which was not to step off the property at all. That was my fault.

Still an important lesson. But the lesson of not stepping off the property at all when dogs walk right by it will continue to be trained.

I know where I made the mistakes, and I talk about it in detail on my Patreon post.

All in all, he did what I taught him. Mistakes are vital so he can learn what not to do. Same for his handler. 🙂

Please don’t recreate this setup with your own dog without a LOT of training already in place.

Allowing a dog to make choices only works when you have a plan for success, a plan for failure, and it’s safe.

Adopt Leo 🖤🐾

Sadly Leo is our longest resident 😭 we rescued him, Lucy and Callie + her pups way back in November of 2025!! Everyone but Leo has been adopted 😭💔

He’s seriously the whole package, he’s stunning, he’s silly, he’s fun, he’s well trained, he’s good with every person he meets, he’s good with dogs, he’s all around amazing! 🖤

I’m so surprised no one has scooped up this gem of a boy 🥹 it’s one of my main priorities to get him adopted before his one year anniversary being here. So that’s one of my goals before we take in any new pups. To get this wonderful boy home once and for all! 🖤

If you can share his reel or show Leo to your friends, we’d be so grateful. I know his forever home is just around the corner 🖤🐾

Adopt Leo 😊❤️‍🩹

Community.

Something we all strive for, value, and connect with at some type of level. While I’m still navigating this journey and learning along the way, one thing hasn’t changed: caring for people and their dogs and showing up for them. That commitment is the foundation of everything I do, and I promise it will remain at the core of this brand as we continue to grow together.

📣 FUNDRAISER ALERT

I am so excited to announce our newest fundraiser for @shilohs_animal_rescue! Shiloh’s mission is to reduce the number of animals euthanized and abandoned in California by rescuing cats and dogs of all sizes.

To help fundraise and support their efforts, we teamed up with @shopkonos per usual to bring the 30ft biothane slip leash with thumb loop. This long line features Kono’s signature metal stopper and thumb loop so no worrying about the leash getting caught no matter what adventure! Lightweight enough for the smallest pups but strong enough for the toughest pullers, the 30ft long line is perfect for those that prefer a slip vs. traditional clip and is handmade to order. Each long line is $71.99 + tax with 20% going directly to Shiloh’s Animal Rescue so DM to order!

Huge thank you to @doggydoggyfoster for helping bring this idea to life and @ocdogcare for being the cutest lil model!
