So excited to share that yesterday I successfully defended my masters thesis in Biological Oceanography at FSU! 🍾🐢🪩🫧

For the past two years I’ve been investigating the inter- and intraspecific interactions between three sympatric sea turtle species in a foraging habitat off Florida’s Big Bend— or, since that’s a mouthful— Stalking the Social Lives of Sea Turtles 🐢

We tagged sea turtles with animal-borne CATS cameras to collect fine-scale behavioral and movement data to contextualize interactions between them and gain better insights into the population and community dynamics in this critical foraging habitat.

It’s so exciting to see hours of video annotations and analyses culminated in this final product + to share it with you all. Hopefully you’ll be able to read about it soon!

A huge thank you to my incredible advisors, Dr. Mariana Fuentes and Dr. Josh Manning, who have provided invaluable guidance and mentorship throughout this project, and even before I started my masters and was a wee undergrad just dipping my fins in the research pool.

And many big thanks to my incredible coauthors, labmates, supportive friends + fam, anyone who helped out in the field, and the turtles we tagged who served as ambassadors for their species to collect this data!

Last month I had the incredible opportunity to join the Waterworld Education Program. A week of teaching K-8 students about marine science was truly unforgettable.

I talked about my Antarctic research, showcasing deep-sea / polar gigantism, and demonstrated deep-sea exploration. I had so much fun working with these students and answering their questions. I only hope that I’ve inspired some to stay curious and to dream big.

Working with this team was so special too. Everyone in the Waterworld team was so passionate and quick to support each other. They truly make science fun. Thank you @singlepoint.media for the amazing photos!

FIELDWORK PHASE 1 COMPLETE (night edition) ✅ to say I am proud of this accomplishment is an understatement! 👩🏼‍🔬My team spend the better part of July walking hundreds of miles, through blisters, aches, and ailments to encounter nesting females on St. George Island! 🐢We collected data for my project as well as multiple State and International collaboration studies. Pictured are just a few of the incredible research experiences I was so fortunate to conduct. A huge THANK YOU and congratulations to my lab and the St. George Island Sea Turtle Patrol volunteers for an incredible phase 1 of PhD data collection 🥹🥰

1. Collecting blood for my second chapter
2. Sporting the box backpack for satellite tagging
3. Our last Satellite tagged female: Betsy 250
4. PTB and Gunner after a successful sat tag Samson
5. Collecting a fresh egg for my PhD chap 2
6. A wild lizard and PTB with one of many sat ladies
7. A female loggerhead returning after a nest!
