C BLU VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH: MIKE ELDERFIELD

Our Volunteer of the Month, proudly supported by C Blu Restaurant, is Mike Elderfield. Mike is one of the most trusted and valued members of our Jet Ski Unit, and his contribution has a genuine impact on the capability and professionalism of the team.

He brings a level of experience, judgement and reliability that we value enormously. When something needs to be done, whether operationally, behind the scenes or in response to an emergency, Mike steps up without hesitation. Just as importantly, he is someone we trust to challenge ideas, offer considered advice and help us make good decisions for the team.

His contribution extends well beyond our own team. Mike is highly regarded within SLSWA and has built strong respect across the broader surf lifesaving community. His recent invitation to an exclusive high-performance session in the South West, sharing his knowledge and experience with clubs from across Australia, reflects the standing he has earned.

Every strong team needs people who can be relied upon when it matters. Mike is absolutely one of those people for us.

Congratulations to our North Cott Volunteer of the Month, brought to you by our friends at C Blu Restaurant who have donated a $200 voucher for each of our monthly winners.

A long-time favourite for Cottesloe locals, C Blu Restaurant offers beachside dining within the Ocean Beach Hotel. Known for its hearty meals, relaxed ambiance, and unbeatable ocean outlook, it’s a place where the community naturally gathers.

The need to inhale & exhale salt air hits me on those quiet artistic days when I need to think & create words.
The need to run away,
capture shape,
watermarks on a seascape,
listen to the sounds
& capture movement.
Those things you may not see clearly that all add to the coast line & create that feeling you need to calm the body.
And it’s not summer yet, but a cloudy spring, overcast day where the ocean flips over the mood.
Then I can interpret & transform that feeling on paper & canvas at the most famous beach in Perth; Cottesloe & dip more than the toes into that space where the horizon meets the cumulus clouds.
And soak in the colours.

The Ocean Beach Hotel (known locally as the “OBH”) in Cottesloe, Western Australia, opened its doors on January 3, 1908, having been constructed in 1907 as a grand hotel in the Federation Filigree style designed by architect Louis Bowser Cumpston. Built on the corner of Marine Parade and Eric Street, it was one of the earliest beachside hotels in the Perth metropolitan area. It served as a central meeting point for local and country families across generations, as well as a popular honeymoon destination and a stopover for travelers exploring the coast. During World War II, the hotel was requisitioned to serve as a recreation leave base for United States submariners, becoming a lively backdrop for wartime romances. In typical Perth style of not leaving well enough alone, Architect W.G. Bennett remodeled the hotel’s frontage in 1936, introducing a cream cement-rendered facade in an Inter-War Functionalist style. Over subsequent decades, continuous renovations and modern updates significantly altered and bastardised the original 1907 structure, leaving it with a mangled footprint rather than a single defining historical architectural style. You can still see the original Victorian structure behind all the vandalism. For generations of West Australians, the OBH became legendary for its raucous, laid-back “Sunday sessions”, where patrons gathered on the walls and in the beer garden to enjoy ocean views and cold drinks after a day at the beach. Then again in 1959 in true Perth style a series of late 20th-century alterations further stripped and modernized the Marine Parade facade, adding new function rooms and completely obscuring the historic structure underneath. #obh #perth #townofcottesloe #cottesloe #pertharchitecture
