This past Thursday, Ocean Janitors attended the Hawaiʻi Pacific University’s Center for Marine Debris Research Hawaiʻi–Taiwan Marine Debris Partnership Forum.

There, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Dr. Brenda Jensen, Dean of the College of Natural and Computational Sciences at Hawaiʻi Pacific University, and by Dr. Shiau-Yun Lu, Director-General of the Taiwan Ocean Conservation Administration, Ocean Affairs Council, and head of the Taiwan delegation.

At the forum we learned about the many initiatives—from marine debris removal to marine debris research—that have been taking place all over the state of Hawaiʻi, from Papahānaumokuākea to Hawaiʻi Island. We also learned about the various projects and programs going on in Taiwan with the Ocean Conservation Administration.

It was also “eye-opening” to hear the many presentations about marine debris, from their origins to composites to even new innovative ways to reuse them in roads and in making plastic lumber.

We at Ocean Janitors would like to congratulate the HPU Center for Marine Debris Research and the Taiwan Ocean Conservation Administration, Ocean Affairs Council, on reaching this monumental achievement and solidifying both a partnership and relations between Hawaiʻi and Taiwan.

From Island nation to another, Aloha!

Magical mantas during coral spawn. These endangered rays receive sometimes a little too much love in Kona, but they are well protected and an economic benefit. There is a long term research project here @mantapacific @manta_man looking at individuals, movements and impacts.

We can do a better job protecting their habitat but in SE Asia where we have worked they would be killed for their gill rakers to supply traditional Chinese medicine. They are more valuable alive than dead.
