‘Ocean Baulcombe-Toppin, like Ebun Sodipo, identifies kinship and lineage in the pop cultural canon: ~mantra~blessedwithcaribbeansunlight.com/ hope~ centres a lyric from the 2000 song ‘Try Again’ by American singer Aaliyah. In its incantational, spell-like quality, the dictum - or demand - echoes the rallying calls for resilience implicit in Sodipo’s works. [MAGNETIC 5 LAUREATE] 🌐 As part of Magnetic 5, @betonsalon will be welcoming @oceanloren, an artist based in London, England. 👤 Ocean Baulcombe-Toppin is a multidisciplinary artist centring slow praxis. Her work engages connectivity, temporality, and memory through the lens of spiritual ecology and Afro-Caribbean diasporic identity. Via coded forms of communication, she crafts poetically across installation, print, language, light and nuanced interactions towards a kind of solace. 🎨 Recent presentations of her work include exhibitions and interventions at Wysing Arts Centre (2026); Metroland Cultures (2025); Sainsbury Centre (2025); Chapter (2024); NEVEN (2024); Somerset House (2022); and South London Gallery (2020). Recent events have been hosted in collaboration with Whitechapel Gallery (2026) and Cell Project Space (2024). Syllabus VIII: Final gathering 🌱 Wysing Arts Centre • March 2026 A look back at an amazing weekend at Wysing with our Syllabus VIII artists and partners in March. Over a weekend, the artists worked to present experiments, works in progress and finalised pieces to eachother and the Syllabus partners for discussion; we saw works spanning performance, film, sound, sculpture, and research. We’d like to extend our warmest thanks and congratulations to this years cohort - It’s been a delight to be a part of this journey and see such fruitful conversations and incredible work come out of their time together. Syllabus VIII Artist Highlight: Ocean Baulcombe-Toppin 💙 Ocean Baulcombe-Toppin is an artist based in London. Her practice centres slow praxis, considering connectivity and temporality through a lens of Afro-Caribbean diasporic identity and spiritual ecology. Via coded forms of communication, she works with installation, print, language, light, and nuanced interactions towards a kind of solace. Her aesthetic explorations extend to cultural research and communal exchange. ‘28.0000° N, 45.0000° W (TIDAL ARCHIVE)’, 2025, was a one-day installation on display at Brent Reservoir, presented as part of ‘Bones, stones and calling the four elements’, the third iteration of the Brent Biennial, curated by @alikati. Ocean says: “The installation was presented shortly after our first gathering at Wysing. In some ways set it the pace for my time during the programme where I have been leaning into spontaneity, working more closely alongside the rhythm of others, and reflecting on my practice in relation to wider art ecologies.” 🫙 ‘28.0000° N, 45.0000° W (TIDAL ARCHIVE)’, 2025. She works mindfully with objects, language, prints, and nuanced interactions to craft a contemporary philosophy inspired by her spirituality, Bajan/British heritage, and ceremonies of solace. Presentations of her work include exhibitions and performative gestures at Metroland Cultures, London; Sainsbury Centre, Norwich; Neven Gallery, London; Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff; Sherbet Green, London; Somerset House, London; and South London Gallery. She is an Associate Lecturer at Chelsea College of Arts. Baulcombe-Toppin’s work is available to view at ‘Bling!’, which continues until 31 January, and is open Thurs- Sun, 12-6pm at Soup, 227 East Street, SE17 2SS.

The Gathering 2024 envisioned retreating as a model of practice — a space where rest and restoration lead to reconnection. We believe that The Gathering sparked meaningful conversations, built new relationships, and created a space for sharing ideas, laying the foundation for new collaborations. With the support of Freelands Foundation, we launched the Legacy Bursary to nurture and sustain these emerging partnerships. 🪴 We are thrilled to announce the recipients of the Legacy Bursary, whose inspiring proposals exemplify the spirit of collaboration and community fostered during The Gathering 2024. ‘Pendulum: Still’ by Ocean Baulcombe-Toppin, currently on display at Sherbet Green in Bethnal Green as part of the group exhibition ‘In Contiguity’, which runs until September 14th.⁣ ⁣ “In Contiguity brings together works by five London-based artists whose varied practices converge on notions of motion, contact, tension and sound. Across video, sculpture, painting, installation and photography, Baulcombe-Toppin, Francis, Lena Hager, Ortuño and Walker each attune their works to the contradistinctions of this subject, together forming a choreography that speaks to the ways in which our bodies traverse in time, touching, parting and passing one another.⁣ ⁣ Baulcombe-Toppin predominantly employs found objects to construct a contemporary philosophy through her spirituality, British-Bajan heritage, and rituals for collective healing. She draws on tropes of domesticity – such as crystal glasses, dark wood furniture and photographs shot on 35 mm – to evoke a sentiment of intimacy in her ceremonial assemblages. Taken out of their usual order, preserved, reconstituted, and often anointed with charged water, these items enact a mysticism that ruminates on moments of togetherness shared between generations, family and friends – from the UK to the Caribbean.⁣ ⁣ Suspended from the ceiling of the gallery hangs a horizontal bar of adjoined cut-glass mugs, most commonly drawn from the cupboard during celebrations and get-togethers where punch or tea is served. They become vestibules connecting bodies in the ritual of celebration and social interaction, their transparent materiality further offering a portal-like liquidity, conjuring the magic of incantation and communion. The composition is reminiscent of a makeshift swing, connecting us to notions of nostalgia, play, solace and hope; two Caribbean-sun-charged, clear-quartz crystals are concealed within the structure, placed there to enact balance, protection, and energy regulation.” - Sherbet Green⁣
