Honus (sea turtles) have been sacred in many cultures, but especially in Hawaiian culture for centuries—symbols of wisdom, longevity, and safe passage across the seas. 🌊🐢 They were seen as guardians, bridging land and ocean, and teaching us how to live in balance. They have always been special to me, I got to spend the summers studying them with @oceanprojectmaui and my mentor CT Ticknor.

Today, these sacred beings are in danger. Industrial fishing practices not only strip the ocean of balance, but countless turtles are killed as bycatch (5K in the US alone annually)—caught and discarded in nets and longlines never meant for them. One of the most impactful ways we can help is by reducing fish intake and returning to sustainable Indigenous and Hawaiian practices that honor the ocean instead of exploiting it. 🌱

I’m still learning my underwater housing and camera 🎥, but I’m so excited to share the stories of these turtles on my trip—stories that remind us of resilience, reciprocity, and why we must fight to protect them. While I’m here, I’ll be working to protect honus and tell their stories. 🖤🐢

Hawaii Day 4 (Part 1) - First full day on Maui! We started the day with an amazing snorkel tour by @oceanprojectmaui ! It was a private tour off the beach at Kapalua Bay, which was perfect as Steven gets motion sick and it was Katherine’s first time. We had a lesson beforehand to learn about all the marine life we were going to see, and then had a wonderful time in the water. Katherine got to fulfill her dream of snorkeling with the turtles, and the best part is, the whole experience was captured for us! Photos were included!
After our snorkel adventure, we headed over to Hula Grill for a beachside lunch and their famous Hula Pie! This day is prob one of my top 5 core memories as a family ever!!! We later had some beach time, then ended the day with a luau, which I’ll post about next…🏝️ 🐠 🌅
