Taking care of my mom @josiesaywhat is a full time job. But I couldn’t ask for a better salary of treats, toys and love! Even when I had to take medicine and wear the funkiest outfits after my spay, mom was the most gentle and encouraging nurse. Plus she got me ready for surgery with lots of play and yoga. Just a few more days of healing and I can run the parks again. Thank you for watching out for us @ocpomrescue! 🐶❤️‍🩹

Mini Cooper is freshly groomed in preparation for his surgery next week!! It will be about 6-8 weeks of recovery so he won’t be able to be groomed for a while. We’re excited and so thankful he’s able to get hip surgery that will help improve his mobility and quality of life 💞 one step closer to finding his forever home!! #pomeranian #pom #pomeranianworld #dogsurgery #fosterdog @ocpomrescue

I could see it the moment I sat down with her.

Ella didn’t bark. Didn’t zoom around the way she usually does. She just looked at me with those big eyes and stayed close, like she was checking I was actually back this time.

I had been gone a week. A work trip, a good one. And I came home to a dog who needed a few days to feel safe again.

That hit me harder than I expected.

We talk a lot about getting a pet for ourselves. The comfort of having someone warm to come home to, the way a dog forces you outside even on the days you’d rather disappear under a blanket, the way they make a house feel less quiet. All real. All true.

But Ella doesn’t know why I left. She didn’t know I was coming back. She just knew I was gone.

And that made me ask something I hadn’t thought to ask before: am I taking care of her the way she takes care of me?

Not just food and walks. Actually paying attention. Noticing when she’s off. Slowing down enough to let her feel settled. Treating her wellness like it matters, not as an afterthought.

The animals in our lives give without asking for much back. A little more presence, a little more attention to what they need, goes a long way.

Ella’s fine now. Back to stealing socks and sprinting for no reason.

But I haven’t forgotten that look.

If you have a pet, this week, just check in. Not for you. For them.
