It was 9 years ago today that this gentle and beautiful soul joined the Angels in Heaven. She was only 54 when she chose to end her 3-year battle with ovarian cancer when the chemo stopped working, and after multiple surgeries had failed to correct debilitating complications.

Even near the end, her spirit remained strong, and her thoughts were on others rather than on herself. She asked me to keep supporting ovarian cancer research, which I continue to do by donating to www.ocrahope.org. She also asked me to share her cancer story of misdiagnosis and late detection/treatment so that others might avoid her fate. To this end, Mary and I established a Nursing Scholarship at Seattle University (her alma mater) a month before she died. This fall, the 10th recipient of the Mary Buike Memorial Scholarship in Nursing will be named; a legacy of which I know Mary would be immensely proud.

Mary's greatest legacies, of course, are her daughter and her two granddaughters, who are thriving!

Mary loved life and was happiest when she was baking, working in the garden or on a hike enjoying nature's beauty. She was not afraid of dying. She told me near the end that she wasn't sad she had to die: She had experienced so much joy in her life that it just wouldn't be right to end it being sad!

I was so incredibly blessed to have shared Mary's extraordinarily joy-filled life for 11 years as her partner.

A little adventure, reminding myself of everything I have to look forward to after my operation ❤️🏕️ I do feel quite vulnerable in sharing this, but if it can help other women and myself, it’s worth it ❤️‍🩹

I’ve shared more in the slides about what’s been happening. We’re still waiting for the full picture, and alongside the uncertainty, I’m trying to get my head around major surgery and surgical menopause at 39.

I wanted to share this to help raise awareness of ovarian cancer investigations, surgical menopause and the impact this can have on your life, even when you look happy and well in photos.

If you’ve had both ovaries removed, with or without a hysterectomy, I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences of recovery, HRT and getting back to exercise and adventures. What helped you most?

Feel free to comment or message me privately. I know everyone’s experience is different, but hearing from women who’ve been through it would mean a lot ❤️

Just to add for context for ladies who may have experience in this situation, depending on histology results I may not be allowed to take HRT.

I'm on the two week cancer pathway so everything is moving very quickly which is helpful 🙏🏼❤️‍🩹
