A little preview of something in the works… On 11/06 at 7:30 PM, the OCU Saxophone Ensemble will premiere a new version of “La Chancla” @dennisllinas, a thrilling work that has really taken off in the band world! Performed in collaboration with @tommy.dobbs and @ocupercussion.

This is a very demanding piece, but our students have been handling it like champs. A real “level up” moment for us, plus another chance to commission a work. While this video represents something still very much in progress, I know they’re gonna deliver a wonderful performance in November.

Many thanks to our contributiors from the OCU studio: Arturo Alvarez, Joseph Tyler Cassady, Connor Cyrus, Alesha Pennock, Daniela Piña, Amelia Rose Sheppard, Haley Smith, Lauren Vaca, and alumnus Rebecca Diane. Also, co-commissioned with Shawn O’Kelley and Owasso HS Saxophone Ensemble as well as @relfarrah, Cynthia Cripps, and @claire_silly with the South Texas Saxophone Collective.

We hope everyone enjoys this fun addition to the sax ensemble + percussion rep!

Last night I had fun sharing the stage with Heartland Orchestra, performing “Scenes From Porgy & Bess,” arranged by Jonah Blum and made famous by my teacher Fred Hemke.

I’m grateful to have had the chance to collaborate with this community group, who were so gracious and open to feedback as we prepared this work. As musicians in academia, we often can find ourselves insularly stuck in our buildings and closed systems of interconnected university-based festivals and recitals — this was a breath of fresh air! Many thanks to Zachary Daniels for having me, as well as to the members of my studio who trekked down to Norman to enjoy a concert of music from Americana.

OCU Sax Day was so much fun! I loved getting to see @bradenstep03 and @nickdoes_somestuff again. @aidan_buhat_ took me on a detour to the Witchita Mountains on our way back, and he JUST HAD to go to the bathroom at a casino.
Also, I won a raffle for a free Vandoren Mouthpiece :3333.

I am happy to share without reservation that OCU Saxophone Day 2026 was a smashing success! By the numbers:
— approx. 90 in attendance
— 4 states represented in attendance
— 12 masterclass performers (4 soloists and 2 quartets)
— 4 world-class featured guest artists; Myles Boothroyd, Johnny Salinas, and Greg Rife were unsurprisingly spectacular
— countless moments of amazing musicianship, pedagogy, and artistry

Enjoy some sights and sounds from the day! Advance apologies to my colleagues Clif and Julie for the Monster Saxophone Ensemble appropriating some iconic repertoire in Egmont Overture and Water Night!
Also, special thanks are owed to Owasso Public Schools, my friend Shawn O'Kelley, and OCU alumnus Aidan Nuñez, for transporting a literal busload of saxophone students to our event. You are champion educators!

Finally, thanks to our sponsors Conn Selmer, Palen Music Center, Vandoren USA, and Légère Reeds in making the day possible! Also, were grateful to host Oklahoma Music Co. with saxophones on display, and Rebecca Sims Woodwinds for on-site repairs.
