Somewhere between cartoon and realism is where things get interesting.

Montreal-based motion designer and art director @oddmiles has spent 12+ years building playful, sometimes surreal 3D worlds. Nature, music, everyday life, and lately, vintage magazines, old books, and traditional illustration all find their way into the mix.

The process might start with a moodboard, or just an open Cinema 4D scene and a willingness to experiment. With Greyscalegorilla Signal, textures, and 3D objects in the toolkit, it’s easier to test ideas and focus on the creative side before getting lost in the technical details.

Because sometimes the best ideas come from playing around and seeing where things go.

Trauma Olympics

James the Seventh is a self-taught musician, singer, songwriter, and producer. After moving to Pittsburgh to pursue ballet, a debilitating injury brought her training to an abrupt end, leaving her unable to walk for nearly a year. During her recovery, she picked up a guitar and discovered a new creative calling.

This project is a short-form 3D visual interpretation of her song Trauma Olympics.

Il y a quelque temps, je suis tombé sur une vieille entrevue de Nick Littlemore d’Empire of the Sun, dans laquelle il partageait une phrase qui m’est particulièrement restée en tête :

“No matter where you are, if you feel for someone and they're in your heart, then you're always with them in some sense.”

Alive — Empire of the Sun

A little while ago, I came across an old interview with Nick Littlemore from Empire of the Sun, where he shared a quote that really stayed with me:

“No matter where you are, if you feel for someone and they're in your heart, then you're always with them in some sense.”

That idea became the starting point for Alive, a project that allowed me to push the visual language we developed throughout this season for Mika’s live shows even further.

For this project, I wanted to go beyond the final images and explore more of the creative process behind them. I worked on a more in-depth moodboard and behind-the-scenes breakdown than I usually do, documenting the research, references, and development that went into building this visual world.

I’ll be sharing the full project soon.
