Congratulations to the CCS FLOWSTATE team, Grand Prize winners of the Biodesign Challenge 2026! Thank you to the @biodesigned team and judges! While the project was grounded in the Color and Materials Design (CMD) Brand Narrative studio, the team is interdisciplinary, including two students from CMD, O’Dell Carson III @odellcarson3 and Amber Tao @ambertao06, one student from @ccsgrad_sustainability, Max van Duyne @maxismmv, and one student from @ccs_productdesign, Abigail Carballo @_abigail.carballo_. The course was led by Associate Professor and Chair, Melanie McClintock @m_mcclintock_cmd. FLOWSTATE is a bio based, temporary spray paint system designed to provide artists with an alternative medium by addressing the environmental and health issues associated with traditional spray paint. FLOWSTATE shifts the narrative by focusing on the value of impermanence. Made entirely from food waste streams sourced from @ecosphereorganics and @feedyourneighborhood, the team designed the paint to shift, fade, and vanish; as true environmental sustainability means leaving no trace. When their paint washes away, it doesn’t pollute; instead it’s safely reintegrated into the ecosystem, proving that public art can be profoundly impactful without being permanent. The MFA in Color & Materials now has an option for a footwear minor, providing a technical foundation in shoemaking and material innovation. Introducing the Biodesign Studio. Our students are pushing the boundaries of CMF by investigating the future of living materials. We are thrilled to be competing in the Biodesign Challenge 2026, tackling the global materials crisis through bio-based inquiry. We have successfully concluded our sponsored studio with @ford, exploring how color, material, and finish (CMF) define the future of mobility. Last semester, students engaged in a rigorous investigation of the evolving automotive landscape to understand how CMF defines the next generation of transportation. The project was a multidisciplinary collaboration with the Transportation Design BFA program. Working in integrated teams, Transportation students spearheaded the interior and exterior design, providing the structural canvas for our Color and Materials Design (CMD) students to apply their strategic vision. This synergy was made possible by instructor Kelly Slank (@kellyslank) and the invaluable support of Kellie Walters (@kelliekay.w), CMF Design Manager at Ford. We thank the entire Ford design team for providing professional feedback and a rare window into the complexities of industry-standard manufacturing and design intent. As part of the curriculum, students mastered the pillars of CMF by creating narratives that connect products to human experience. Around this time last year, I wrapped up the Pensole x Wolverine Worldwide 5-week intensive program. That experience led me to an opportunity to work with Merrell. Over the past eight-plus months, I’ve been learning, growing, and building alongside a truly strong team. My first footwear design is moving along well, and if everything stays on track, it’s planned for Spring/Summer 2027.
