Step by step indigo textile dyeing process; from preparing the vat, to wax resist and dyeing/oxidizing the fabric in various shades of blue.

I'm using the indigo dyed fabrics for a sonic installation with sounds from the West African Atlantic coast recorded with a hydrophone (underwater microphone). The indigo fabrics, don't just represent the blue shades of the ocean, but also to reflect on the below mentioned traditions and histories about independence, womxn's knowledge and resistance.

Indigo dye comes from the leaf a legume plant native in West Africa, other parts of Africa and the world. The plant is a woody climbing shrub with pink or violet flowers.

One of the oldest documented evidence of indigo-dyed textiles in West Africa comes from Bandiagara in present-day Mali, where Tellem textiles dating to the 11th century include indigo-dyed cloth. In northern Ghana, in the Ngbanya language indigo is called gara and is locally processed; in Hausa, talakí is a local name for the indigo plant. In Yorùbá, àdìrẹ is a major indigo resist-dyeing tradition, using techniques such as oníkò (tied resist) and alábàrẹ (stitched resist). Kofar Mata in Kano, Nigeria, has one of the largest historic indigo dye-pit traditions for more than 500 years and it's is still operating today.

During colonial times, enslavement and forced displacement, Indigo practices were brought to the Americas often under exploitative conditions to produce blue denim for capitalist purposes and benefits. Despite the colonial violence, indigo textile techniques were continued to be used creatively in the diaspora and on the African continent. Indigo dyed fabrics and patterns have been used for different occasions and purposes, like celebrations, rituals, mourning as well as for womxns economic independence.

This is the beginning of a several year long Soundscape Ecology project in the Western Region of Ghana. The aim is to understand the recovery of a forest ecosystem on a sonic level and and translating these insights into an audio-visual installation.

Capturing the beauty of one of my favorite places in Busua — @odovalley 💛

Some of the tastes, textures, landscapes, flora, and fauna I captured over the course of a week. It was my first time seeing, tasting, and learning about some of these plants on the motherland.

My time at Odo always grounds me in the present. I’m endlessly amazed and inspired by nature and all she provides. Can’t wait to discover more!

Grateful for everyone at Odo and the beautiful people I’ve met in Busua. Until I see you again 😘🤎🌿

At the Agona market in Busua, I found myself drawn to an ingredient that needs no introduction in many Ghanaian kitchens.

Its aroma is unmistakable, but beyond that first impression is the depth of flavour it brings to soups, stews and sauces. For generations, momone has been part of our coastal food traditions; a way of preserving the harvest of the sea and carrying those flavours into our everyday cooking.

What stories of this staple have you heard, asides the pungent smell and its intensely present flavor in foods?

Some of my teenage years were spent in a house where food was always being prepared and sold. There was kenkey over a wood-fired flame, banku and an assortment of soups by Freda, kokodzogbo by Tega, and countless other meals that marked the rhythm of each day. Breakfasts, lunches, desserts, I grew up watching hands transform simple ingredients into nourishment, community, and livelihood.

Standing behind this flame @odovalley brought those memories rushing back. It reminded me that long before I became a cook, food had already become part of my language. Those moments quietly shaped my appreciation for the craft.

Sometimes, the places we visit don’t introduce us to something new they simply return us to parts of ourselves we’d almost forgotten.

What does vegetation mean to you?

To me, vegetation is the living expression of a place. The collection of plants, trees, grasses, shrubs and forests that reveal the character of a landscape.

It is more than just greenery. Vegetation tells stories about climate, soil, history, and human interaction. A mangrove forest speaks of the relationship between land and water; a savannah carries the rhythm of seasons; a tropical forest holds layers of biodiversity and memory.

It is how the earth breathes, shelters, feeds, and renews itself. It creates a sense of belonging.

Are you making a conscious effort to protect this?
