Black moms face higher rates of complications tied to gestational diabetes, and too often the follow up care after birth never happens. That gap matters. 💜

The glucose test around 24 to 28 weeks is one you do not want to skip. Gestational diabetes usually has no symptoms, so you can feel perfectly fine and still have it. Left unmanaged, it can lead to serious complications for you and your baby. 🩺

The good news: with the right diet, movement, and medication when needed, moms with gestational diabetes have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies every day. 🌿

It usually goes away after birth, but it raises your risk of diabetes later on. Ask your provider about postpartum screening and keep showing up for your own care. You deserve that. 🤍

Behind every surgery is a team of highly trained professionals helping patients through some of their most vulnerable moments.

To help support the next generation of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), we recently awarded 15 third-year CRNA students $30,000 scholarships through a new partnership with @odunursing.

The scholarships are part of a $1.3 million commitment over the next three years to help address a growing need for anesthesia providers and strengthen the future healthcare workforce.

For students, the scholarships help ease the financial burden of an intensive graduate program. For patients, they help ensure access to the highly skilled professionals who provide care, comfort and confidence before, during and after surgery.

Today's scholarship recipients are tomorrow's healthcare leaders, and we're proud to support their journey. 💙

Earlier this month, two of our member clinics joined Virginia leaders for an important conversation about efforts to help residents maintain access to SNAP and Medicaid benefits as federal changes take effect. Shown here are clinic representatives Tammy Speerhas of ODU Community Care and Elizabeth Marsh of PiN Ministry with Marvin Figueroa, Virginia Secretary of Health & Human Resources.

These conversations are an important reminder that advocacy is an essential part of caring for our community. We’re pleased to see our member clinics collaborating with community partners and statewide leaders who share a commitment to a healthier, more equitable Virginia.

2026 ODU Alumni Honors Spotlight: Dr. Marcus L. Martin, M.D. ’76

A trailblazer. A physician. A leader. A Monarch whose impact extends far beyond the classroom. As a member of the charter class of Eastern Virginia Medical School, Dr. Marcus L. Martin made history as the first African American graduate of EVMS in 1976. His distinguished career in emergency medicine, academic leadership, and diversity and equity has left an enduring mark on institutions and communities across the nation.

Dr. Martin is Professor Emeritus and former Chair of Emergency Medicine at the University of Virginia, where he also served as Vice President and Chief Officer for Diversity and Equity. His national leadership includes serving as President of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the Council of Residency Directors—organizations that established leadership and scholarship awards in his name.
His commitment to higher education includes service on the EVMS Board of Visitors, including terms as Vice Rector and Rector, and co-chairing the UVA President’s Commission on Slavery and the University. The UVA Board of Visitors established the endowed Marcus L. Martin Distinguished Professorship in Emergency Medicine in his honor.

His legacy is also deeply connected to ODU. His wife, Donna, is an ODU alumna, and their family continues the Monarch tradition, including their daughter, Dr. Jamela Martin, who served as faculty in ODU’s School of Nursing. Dr. Martin and his EVMS classmates also established the first EVMS class scholarship, creating opportunities for future generations.

We are proud to recognize Dr. Marcus L. Martin, M.D. ’76, as a 2026 Distinguished Alumnus.

👉Join us Thursday, October 29, 2026, at Chartway Arena as we celebrate Dr. Martin and our 2026 Alumni Honors recipients. Your support helps celebrate ODU's legacy while creating opportunities for future Monarchs.

🎒🩺 A fun surprise at the Pediatric Back-to-School Physical Event!

While visiting the event hosted by ODU Community Care and the Ellmer School of Nursing, Dr. Abuhamad, Executive Vice President for Health Sciences, stopped by our ODU MSAT station to see what our students were up to.

Our first- and second-year students gave him a demonstration of the Y-Balance Test and even convinced him to step in and give it a try! 💪

It's always fun to share what our students are learning while serving the community.
