From « Lisa's Substitute » (season 2), directed by Rich Moore
Yesterday was Presidents Day, here is for the occasion a panorama, vertical moreover, of Bart tearing the poster promoting his opponent Martin Prince to the elections of class president. Yes I know, the report is rough but what do you want, we depicted Presidents Day only once in the whole series. Anyway, there are a lot of details swarming in this panorama that didn't seem to need many. Of course, I realize that this is usual in season 2 as I see it. But for example, isn't it a wonderful detail to see Milhouse, Lewis and Richard acting as bodyguards by preventing the hysterical crowds of students from getting too close to Bart. Or having a sign with the day's menu in the cafeteria, instead of a blank wall.

From « Homer's Odyssey » (season 1), directed by Wes Archer
This panorama is among the very first crowd shots and, let's face it, you can't always get it right the first time. I know there are people who like it because you can see the enormous creativity of the designers, who must have had a lot of fun drawing this. But personally, I'm glad that the series quickly started to draw (much) more realistic crowds. By the way, if you want realistic crowds, you don't have to go very far. Skip 5 episodes and you'll get to "The Telltale Head" which even has the audacity to place recognizable recurring characters in its crowds. Anyway, I had fun picking out some of the characters that can be seen here because after all, if they drew some crazy stuff, it's to make us notice them. On the left you can see a kind of weird pale guy, with eyes and nose only made of dots. Right next to him is someone who looks very much like Charlie Brown, to the point of reproducing his haircut (and no, it's not Ralph). We have, above the guy with the red beret, a kind of Abraham Simpson but who seems to me to be minor (like three quarters of the crowd in fact). And right next to him, we have Fry from Futurama, or at least something close to it. It's funny to note that the extras next to the Simpsons are more realistic, probably because we'll see them for longer due to the stop of the camera movement at that point. I also notice a certain effort on the after shots where we see the family members in close-up one by one. Indeed, they are not simple zooms on this panorama but other drawings completely redone.

From « King Size Homer » (season 7), directed by Jim Reardon
Come to papa! This towel rack gag will always work for me. It serves no purpose other than to be funny since it establishes an inconsistency here, admittedly slight. But it is also a running gag. Well done. The execution is very good here since the choice of the panorama obviously allows to reveal with a downward camera movement that Homer's belly is held by the towel rack. And if you think Bart is slightly too high, know that he is standing on the toilet. There's no point in having him stand on the toilet with a foot to make sure we see his head above Homer's belly. A matter of composition. The fact that this was done solely for composition is confirmed by the fact that there is normally no toilet there. The toilet is normally on the other side, the exact opposite of the room. But again, a matter of composition.

From « Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment » (season 8), directed by Bob Anderson
Uh... so, this shot is supposed to be very stylish (and it is when we see it in the episode), but it looks off. I don't know, it's very weird. There's a few things that are a little bit inconsistent, wrong that make the drawing look weird. For example, the right arm is way too short, or is it the left arm that is too long. The pants also, which seem to be much too high. Anyway, if we ignore these defects, the drawing is still well placed. It is in perfect adequacy with the script since it serves to make a classic panorama of a character to support his power. But it serves more particularly to reveal little by little the hat that Homer has just started to wear. The all-black shoes are also a nice addition, which brings diversity from the beginning of the shot.
