To everyone who came to The W&R Birthday Show, artist or audience…..
your dedication to this community is untouchable. Seeing you pour your hearts and talents into this while remaining so genuinely kind has been an incredible experience. You make producing in such a stressful time almost feel easy, and I’m forever grateful for that. To all of my dear friends in these photos, I love you all so much & you are so special! ✨🩷

Always remember one thing - Every single person in this community deserves this space we all have built together. We would not be here without the audience, production staff & the artists!

There will be plenty more photos of the whole cast and videos are coming soon. 💋

What makes a demon? How r they born? What r they made of? Who claims them when the lights go out? Do they cut? Do they bleed? Are they ancient as stones or brief as mayflies? Do they talk with a thousand tongues or do they hum with two lips? Do they dream? Do they drink the night dry? Do they run from the day burning? What r their names? Not the names we give them: Bitch. Slut. Whore. Freak. Damned. Evil. What r their chosen names? Azriel. Azaroth. Lucifer. Eurydice. Celeste. James. What r their real hearts? Not the ones we put in them: Black. Hollow. Cold. Empty. Do demons devour light? Have they ever tasted it? R they allowed to? What’s their favorite color? Does one love hot pink? Neon green? Electric blue? Do they swim in oil? Bathe in moonlight? Do they fly with winter? Are they hidden in spring? Do they know what’s said about them? The demons u know. Do they choose who they possess? Do they pick who they’ll haunt? Who is their master? Is it who I think it is? Demons come out, and I hear: “where is God?”. Demons run wild, and I say: “Right here.” Spiked foot, red tail, one by one. Two hoofs, four horns, and a gown of stars. Five wings, eight arms. Some scream the world, some silence the land. Some leap for joy, some pound in fury. Among us, and demons leave their talons to themselves. Some ask me what evil is. Others wonder what it is to be good. Some laugh at labels. Others wail for lies. One asks why we fear them. One admits to being afraid. One grabs me. Eyes wide. It moans: “Why do they hate us?” And in a circle, the demons cry: “We exist! We exist!” In a ring. A flame building. Tall as truth. And we fly, hand in hand, round the sun. No one left to claim. No heart as black as above. What makes a demon? Rise. Rise. Rise and scream the names they gave us: Bitches. Sluts. Whores. Freaks. Damned. Evil. And we exist.

Last Saturday in Durham, the Kings came out. There was a better crowd than I expected. Usually the attendance for an all-Kings show is half of a Queen’s. Then Sunday in Raleigh, there were quite a few Kings who competed for Glitter Hour. One even won. It did me good. It did the community good. If anything, it told me 2 things: change is acknowledged in drag & it can be hard out there for a King. When I first discovered drag, Kings were not on the card. When I went to my first show, Kings were what stood out for me. The Kings were creative. They were passionate. They were fierce. Every show since has brightened the fire I have for supporting the Kings, for there aren’t as many who should in our community. Why? U say “drag”, most have a fixed view on what that is, and it’s a narrow view. Kings don’t fit in that space. This nearsightedness carries over from straight crowds to established performers. Kings r different. Kings r unique. Kings r radical. So of course in the mainstream, Kings r ignored. It’s shifting. We see it. But every movement begins at home. The local Kings pave the way, but it’s a hell of a road. We’ve faced prejudice in our community from the outside. It’s what drove us to do what we do; be what we be. But there is an inner prejudice; an indifference among us. Not just in drag, but in the spectrum itself. It goes beyond Kings, and hits the very center of what makes us who we r. There is a prejudice against people. Trans people. Genderfluid. So many who don’t fit the mold to some of what it means to be not just Queer, but human. Kings remind us of this, and some don’t want to be reminded. It’s more comfortable for them to stay in the bunker. Kings r out in the field, willingly. Every performance builds another brick in the road. We have Kings all over N.C. But where r they in the clubs? In the crowd? Why do they have to linger below? They r different. We spend our lives trying to reconcile who we r, and after we do we have to prove ourselves to our own allies. No. They need to prove something to us. To those who r exiled from the main-stage. To those ignored. To those unloved. The answer is simple: support the Kings. They’ve earned their crown.
