Defy the Dusk by @danielleljensen

𝙒𝙤𝙬. 𝙋𝙝𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙖𝙡.
Give this movie an Oscar.
In the meantime, I have given it permanent space in my brain in the form of 273 highlights.

𝘈𝘴𝘩 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘥, 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩,
𝘞𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘸𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘯 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩

Just thinking about this book gives me goosebumps (or is that the feeling of straxi crawling over my skin?). I’m not sure if I consumed this book or if it consumed me.

“𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘬𝘰𝘯 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘴𝘩𝘦’𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘵 𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘻𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘰𝘷𝘷’𝘴.”

I spent a lot of time furious with characters only to later understand their thoughts and reasonings. So many arguments left me puzzled as to how the characters could possibly work together towards one goal. I am beyond excited to see where the next book goes from here.

“𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴, 𝘝𝘰𝘹, 𝘐’𝘭𝘭 𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘢 𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘢𝘨𝘦. 𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦, 𝘸𝘦’𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘨𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯. 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘐 𝘷𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘥 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘮𝘢𝘯’𝘴 𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘸.”

I am a page counter as I read, and I found myself ignoring the page numbers because I was not prepared for this book to end. If this book is not the bar we are aiming to meet when reading dystopian fantasy, I truly do not know what is.

“𝘞𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘰 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘳 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘯 𝘢 𝘩𝘰𝘵 𝘥𝘢𝘺, 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘪𝘵?”

-Dystopian fantasy
-Feminine rage
-Elemental magic
-True enemies-to-lovers(?)
-She can fight for herself (and others)
-Slow burn
-Nonstop banter
-High octane fighting/magic use

🌙 A few weeks ago I posted a video talking about the concept art for DEFY THE DUSK, illustrated by @offbeatworlds, which perfectly captured the looks of Lirien and Vox. Here is the fully rendered concept art for anyone who missed it!

ARC REVIEW 🫶🏾✨📚

—DEATH OF A MORTAL—
By: M. L. Godwyn

Rating: 6.0 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Spice: 3.0 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️

I had to sit and truly contemplate with myself after finishing this phenomenal read. I’ve been seeing glowing reviews all week, and now I understand why — I wholeheartedly agree. This one deserves a spot at the very top of your TBR.

This story delivers gods, prophecies, a rebel movement, and enough twists to give me whiplash. Every time I thought I had the plot figured out, I was proven completely wrong every time.

We’re dropped into a world where fae reign as the superior species and mortals face extinction. Through Naci’s POV, we follow a girl raised under cruelty — an abusive father, a vicious sister — with her only light being her younger sister, Nella. Naci is fierce, determined, and resilient no matter how her circumstances shift. I was in constant awe of her strength.

Then there’s Varyn, a fae male wrapped in layers and masks. I still don’t know if we’ve met the real him yet. His intrigue lies in that uncertainty — is he trustworthy, or is there a deeper agenda?

And Drayce? Instantly top‑tier book boyfriend material. He starts off rough and withdrawn, but the story slowly peels back his layers. His powers alone gave me goosebumps.

This book made me laugh, cry, and repeatedly pick my jaw up off the floor. As book 1 of 4, it sets the stage beautifully — and I genuinely cannot express how excited I am for book 2.

I received an advance review copy from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

❤️ World Building: I absolutely loved the world building, from the places we see, to the magic system some people get to use, it was all fabulous! There were some new and unique aspects to the magic/shifter elements that I have seen before.

❤️ The Characters: The Characters were so well written! No unnecessary miscommunications, none of the FMC being always right and not listening to the advice of others...even if it takes her a bit to come around. Drayce was just perfect, always quietly waiting, always watching, always protecting, but always behind the scene. The side characters really stood out, I absolutely love a great female friendship.

❤️ The Story: The story was great. There are so many hidden secrets going on, so many surprises, and while it didn’t end on a huge cliffhanger (thank you), you can tell there is so much more to come in the next book!

❤️‍🔥Overall: I highly recommend this book, it kept me so engaged!

Roc Eagle fact Inspired by Bernitha: The Roc is a mythical bird said to be so enormous it could pick up an adult elephant in its talons. Most mythologists believe the mystical bird of prey to be of Arabian or Persian origin, although some place the roc’s origin in India or China. According to the legend, it stood perhaps as much as 20 feet (~6 meters) tall with a wingspan of up to 43 feet (~13 meters).

✨ I’m so happy to announce that I’m officially part of the ARC team for Death of a Mortal by @mlgodwyn.author 🖤

The moment I saw this stunning cover and read the tropes, I was instantly sold—I just knew I had to read this book.
Make sure to swipe to see the absolutely gorgeous character art of our heroine!

📖 What it’s about:

For mortals in Caelia, every day could be their last—especially in Ashenholt.

Nineteen-year-old Naci Corren has spent her entire life surviving in a world that never wanted her. Born mortal in a realm ruled by magic, she has endured cruelty from both her father and the fae. But when a devastating magical attack puts her youngest sister’s life in danger, Naci makes a desperate choice: flee and search for the mother she only remembers from her dreams.

Freedom is short-lived when their journey leads them straight into the fae king’s capital. There, Naci is swept into a dangerous web of secrets, betrayal, rebellion, and an ancient prophecy that forces her to choose between saving the world that took everything from her... or watching it burn.

✨ Magic, fae, rebellion, morally complex characters, prophecies, and impossible choices? Count me in!

I can’t wait to dive into this story and share my thoughts with all of you.
Thank you so much, @mlgodwyn.author , for this amazing opportunity! 🖤📚
