🌴🌕🌔MOONRISE 🌖🌑🌴takes the occasion of the full-moon, mid-autumn festival to connect Asian diasporic worldviews, spaces, and territories in South Florida. This performance-talk-workshop explores non-western embodied knowledge systems in architectural & agricultural practices.

Presentations by:

@lllilywonlll discusses the emergence of Asian-run home gardens and farming communities in Homestead and Redland, agricultural areas south of Miami. Adopting the common agriculturalist view of South Florida as an “outdoor greenhouse”, they are growing various species of tropical vegetables and fruits for diasporic food networks on the East Coast. @charmoftheorient , a graduate student from Myanmar, shares how sourcing tropical produce for her juicery venture in Miami led to connections with different diasporic groups.

@stephkyuyounglee illustrates the entanglements of agents, events, and institutions that led to the history of land grabs from Asian American agrarian settlements — from the Homestead Act, Chinese Exclusion Act, and Executive Order 9066 to the latest rise of Sinophobic Alien Land Laws, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ SB 264 from 2023.

@rickyli22 situates the work of @environmentaltechnik (WET) within architecture’s shifting disciplinary bounds. He presents the curatorial project Breach, which transfers the archives of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ work on “water-related infrastructures” to the context of an art institution, and introduces Maritime Substates, the ongoing research practice on how oceanic spaces have mediated modern enclosures and exposures of this planet.

@xiaoxi_projecting traces how the calendar functions as a spatial-political-epistemological instrument in the making of societies during the political demise of the lunisolar calendar and subsequent promulgation of Gregorian and Greenwich Mean Time in revolutionary China. She presents world-making documents that translate, reconcile, and illustrate pluralistic temporal realities during revolutionary political transitions.
