Ships traveling long distances, such as cruise ships and cargo ships, in their effort to maintain or increase the stability of the vessel, collect seawater in their tanks (sea ballast). Marine species, so-called invasive or “Lessepsian migrants” such as lionfish, hare fish and purple jellyfish, are often trapped in them, traveling from one marine ecosystem to another. This phenomenon is also found in the Mediterranean Sea, where invasive species, which have themselves lost their natural environment, interrupt the balance of the region’s ecosystem.

«Bodies floating into the land» explores the impacts of sea travelers on local biodiversity, health and the economy in relation to climate change. The artists reflect on the vulnerability of all “bodies of water” starting from the island of Tinos. Poseidon, the god of the sea, usually appears as a punisher and is associated with extreme phenomena such as omens, storms, earthquakes, sinkholes and volcanic eruptions.

However, in Tinos, he was worshiped as a healer and his wife Amphitrite as the patroness of female fertility. Drawing inspiration from this positive quality of Poseidon, a message of comfort in the face of environmental distress and a hope of planetary healing, a holistic view of the health of people and ecological systems are conveyed.

PURPLE — ECOLOGIES OF SALTSCAPES

ATOPOS cvc × Office of Hydrocommons is happy to present the trailer of the new video work created by Annalisa Zegna & Mauro Diciocia in the framework of Purple — Ecologies of Saltscapes, a multidisciplinary research project developed during their residency in Greece. Exploring the hypersaline lagoons of Messolonghi, the project investigates the ecological interconnections between extremophile organisms inhabiting saline environments. Drawing on field research conducted in dialogue with scientists, environmental researchers, and local communities, the artists present an audiovisual installation combining video and field recordings that translate the micro-dynamics and macro-rhythms of the lagoon ecosystem.

Inspired by the Purple Earth Hypothesis and the vibrant pigments of microorganisms thriving under extreme conditions, Purple — Ecologies of Saltscapes reflects on resilience as a collective ecological process, foregrounding interdependence, care and coexistence in times of environmental uncertainty.

We are looking forward to a guided walk by @elenrica of the @officeofhydrocommons___ along the hidden and submerged waterways of Athens. The event takes place on Monday the 27th of April, beginning at 18:00 from Goethe-Institut Athen.

Hidden Mother Waters is a sound walk about water commons in Athens led by Eleni Riga, Curator of the Office of Hydrocommons. From the position of the Mediterranean South, it raises key questions about climate and social change in relation to water and the body. It includes pre-recorded sounds of the hidden waters of Attica, interviews with collaborators, as well as excerpts from texts and artworks that are part of the project The Office of the Water Commons. By walking on these hidden waters we raise awareness of what is underneath, of the submerged, the buried, the silenced flows that continue to shape the surface of everyday life. Drawing on the notion of the υποχθόνιο (the subterranean, the under-earth), Hidden Mother Waters invites participants to attune to what cannot be immediately seen but is persistently present: aquifers and riverbeds beneath asphalt, infrastructures of extraction and control, as well as the affective and historical residues carried within them. The walk becomes a threshold practice, a passage between above and below, surface and depth, body and territory.

💫We choose hope because it is a dangerous thing. It makes you do crazy things like love, celebrate, strike, fight, make babies, not make babies, change bodies, change laws, change lives!
💫 I chose to work with a contradiction: Nature and Culture, two categories historically constructed as separate. Maybe it’s time to bring them back together. In this sense, I’m not defending nature, I’m defending myself by proposing another language of commissioning, producing and curating. One that recognizes how humans (especially the most vulnerable among us) and the bodies of land and water, animals and plants, are inseparable, entangled in a world where survival matters more than purity. Inspired by “We Are ‘Nature’ Defending Itself: Entangling Art, Activism and Autonomous Zones” by Isabelle Fremeaux & Jay Jordan.

*Special mention for the Living Archive of Transition, a solo exhibition by anthr0morph, curated by the artistic director Vassilis Zidianakis. Trans rights need to MAGNIFIED! Trans women are the test ground for stripping everyone’s rights.

Short video explaining my project as laureate of the residency program Institut français x Cité internationale des arts on ecofeminist art in France and the artistic resonances of the work of the french writer Francoise d’Eaubonne. My research will continue with the help of Institut français x Cité internationale des arts and ATOPOS cvc in January 2026. Thank you so much for this unique opportunity. Just a correction, the book Le Féminisme ou la Mort was reedited in French in 2020 by Le passager clandestin with the preface of Myriam Bahaffou and Julie Gorecki and published in English in 2022 by verso.

Thrilled to share how energizing our recent joint presentation “Sweating Together: collective care, olfactory politics, labor, and interconnectedness” at Some Like It Hot (Parse Journal- University of Gothenburg) has been. We even had matching boilersuits! Collaborating with the artist and researcher Elektra Stampoulou @oh.so.many.narratives was truly inspiring. Together, we explored sweat as a lens for understanding radical interdependence, drawing from our research in the historic Bath House of the Winds - Museum of Modern Greek Culture in Athens (May-August 2025) @museumofmoderngreekculture @counterpoints_gr where shared heat once cultivated community, inclusion and repair. Abstract below: Curator Eleni Riga (Office of Hydrocommons) and artist-researcher Elektra Stampoulou, reimagine sweat not as an unwanted by-product but as a sign of radical interdependence and shared embodiment amid inequality. They present research from the project Hyperhidrosis: Sweating Together, exhibited in Athens’ Bath House of the Winds—the city’s sole preserved Ottoman hammam—employing sweat as a lens to examine bodily, social, and environmental ecologies. Riga frames the Ottoman Bath as a model of collective care, where shared heat fostered inclusion, resilience, and repair. Drawing on Mediterranean histories of slowness and interdependency, she connects these architectures to contemporary practices of solidarity in an overheated world. Stampoulou’s thirsty towels explores the olfactory politics of sweat in Athens and the shifting smellscapes of our bodies. Through fieldwork, participatory distillation, and storytelling, she attempts to compose a decentralized olfactory archive, tracing how the scent of sweat intersects with labor, class, ethnicity, and solidarity, imagination, and care.
