𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘵 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘔𝘰𝘭𝘦 – a book that had me laughing so much, I’m convinced it could give some stand-ups a run for their money. 😂

(For individuals aged 13+)

𝙒𝙝𝙤 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙞𝙩? — someone looking for a genuinely funny, light and easy read with a wonderfully chaotic narrator.

𝙒𝙝𝙤 𝙬𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙞𝙩? — someone looking for logical comedy, plot-heavy story or a conventional coming-of-age novel.

➡️ Adrian Mole is a teenager existing in 1980s who’s caught up in school activities, family drama, school romance and the everyday disasters of adolescence — all through his hilariously self-important diary entries. 😂

What I loved most was how effortlessly funny this book is. The humour is wonderfully dry, absurd and unexpectedly relatable. There were so many moments where I actually laughed out loud like a mad woman.

It’s also super easy to read and enjoy, which made it a perfect comfort read. I finished it in 12 days and honestly didn’t want it to end.

Funny, chaotic and ridiculously entertaining — definitely one of those books you should pick up to lift your mood.

It was a such pleasure to spend the morning running a Sue Townsend archive workshop for the fantastic students @moatcollege, who were focused, engaged & super smart. Superstars, all! What is an archive? What’s in an archive? What does an archive reveal about a writer & her work? What does an archivist do? How are archives used in exhibitions? Just some of the questions we explored by looking at items in Sue Townsend’s archive, including notes, a letter to her editor and a shopping list. Did you know that Sue Townsend liked a digestive biscuit?

📖 Book Review 📖

Adrian Mole The Prostate Years - Sue Townsend @officialadrianmole

Synopsis in the comments 🤟

Well this is it, after seven books before it we finally reach the final Adrian Mole diary. At the beginning of the series Adrian is 13 3/4 and with his final and possibly must tragic outing we find him at 39 3/4. I have had so much fun revisiting this series that I originally started in my teenage years, its been so interesting to view it through the eyes of an adult, many things hit a lot different now compared to when I read each if these books previously.

Anyway The Prostate Years finds Adrian married to Daisy with another child. After his reckless spending in the previous book he is now living in the middle of nowhere at his parents converted pigsty.

Adrian continues to scrape a living working at a second hand bookshop for kind hearted Mr Carlton-Hayes while his Mother is written her less than truthful memoirs.

Adrian has never been the luckiest of people with regular mishaps and bad decision making he often finds himself in some form of trouble. He has always had a higher opinion of himself than others do but is ultimately a good person that at some point deserved a break however The Prostate Years is not where hes going to catch one...

Daisy is miserable in the country, his two boys are in different parts of the world, his daughter is wild, his sister is about to tear the family apart and Adrian's own health starts to decline.

The Prostate Years is quite an upsetting book as Adrain's life quickly starts to fall apart starting with his cancer diagnosis, as his he fights for his life his wife finally has enough of Adrian not being present and listening to her need and looks elsewhere for the attention she craves.

The Prostate Years still features a quite irritating Adrian Mole, for the various reasons I've went into previous but this book just feels like one thing after another is piled on top of him which finally allows you to see the actual vulnerable person and leaves you with a deep sympathy for him.

The Prostate Years is a fantastic premature ending to great nostalgic series for me 🤟

Have you read this one? What did you think?

📖 Book Review 📖

Adrian Mole and the Weapons of Mass Destruction - Sue Townsend @officialadrianmole

Synopsis in the comments 🤟

I always thought of Adrian Mole as just a series of funny books that follows a lad from his teenage years to adulthood. I first read them all, apart from the final book, when I was in my teenage years so I think just remembered the humour that flows throughout the series. As I've reread them now as an adult I am able to pick a lot more out that makes me look at the series in a different light, mainly thinking Adrian is quite a self centered idiot bit with Weapons of Mass Destruction I started to see a real sadness to the story as Adrian's life starts to come apart without him fully realising it until its to late.

Weapons of Mass Destruction find Adrian now at the age of 34, finds himself without his children, one has moved to Nigeria with his mother and the other is preparing for war in Army as the conflict with Iraq is about to begin. Adrian makes the decision to buy a ridiculous expensive flat and couple that with numerous credit cards and store cards as he plunges himself into deep and deep debt throughout the book.

Adrian clings onto his dreams of becoming a best selling author whilst working for the lovely Mr Carlton-Hayes in an antiquarin bookshop, this being the one bright spot in his life, though he doesnt quite see that yet.

Adrian's lovelife continues to be disastrous with a relationship with Marigold that he just doesnt want but ultimately ends up in an engagement and fake pregnancy and the begins of an affair with Marigold's sister, Daisy.

Middle age is tough for Adrian and he unwillingness to see the reality of his life leads him further into a spiral he may not get out of.

Weapons of Mass Destruction is the one that make you start to feel sorry for the way Adrian's life is heading, but also he continues to play the role of the superior intellectual and believing everything will work out without putting in the effort to sort it, so I was kind of left with mixed feelings about Adrian and plight.

Quite a bleak one this time but still fantastic, have read this one??

📖 Book Review 📖

The Lost Diaries of Adrian Mole 1999 - 2001 - Sue Townsend @officialadrianmole

Synopsis in the comments 🤟

I had a choice with this one, it was released after Weapons of Mass Destruction, however its set in between that and The Cappuccino Years..so the question was which order to read them in.

The Lost Diaries continues to follow Adrian Mole as he navigate his early 30s as a single dad, now living in social housing following the a house fire caused by an unstable ex girlfriend. Adrian is trying to find his footing as a father whilst pursuing a career as a writer. The people in Adrian's life continue to contribute to the craziness, with his mother and father involved in a marriage swap with Pandora's parents.

Adrian's love for Pandora is eternal but he again finds himself in a relationship he doesn't quite want and doesnt know how to get out of. Added to everything is the appearance of Adrian's half brother, Brett. Adrian is the one to initiate this contact but quickly comes to regret it when discovering Brett is everything Adrian is not.

As the book ends you do find out the reason these became the lost diaries as Adrian again finds himself in trouble to close out a book!

While I continue to enjoy this series, the reread has highlighted that my enjoyment comes from those atound Adrian, rather than the title character himself. The supporting cast are often the ones providing the humour and heart to the story, Glenn is an excellent addition to the cast of characters as Adrians eldest son, whilst Adrian increased entitlement and neurosis are creating a black pit of despair at times. While he doesnt have much luck, his attitude and lack of self awareness play a massive part in his downfall.

What I do think on reread is that the series' mood does shift with the time period it is set in and Adrian increasing age, and as such the tone feels dark and even more bitter as he continues to struggle to find any success as he gets older.

I did enjoy this, but I'm finding my enjoyment of the series has changed reading this at an age more in line with Adrian Mole 🤟

🤟 December Wrap Up 🤟

Well we've reached the final monthly book wrap up of 2025 and with the 6 books I read this month I manage to bypass my 2025 target of 80 by 3 books...if you didnt see the book review post, the book that got me to my target was Hannah Morrissey's The Unlucky One.

I think I'm either going to stick to 80 books for 2026 or maybe lower it a bit to take some pressure off from what I'm sure is gonna be a busy year!

As I mentioned I ended up reading 6 books this month which were...

📖 The Ravaged - Norman Reedus with Frank Bill
📖 The Unlucky Ones - @hannahmorrisseywriter
📖 Preacher : War in the Sun - Garth Ennis & Steve Dillon
📖 The King in Yellow - Robert W. Chambers
📖 Adrian Mole and the Weapons of Mass Destruction - Sue Townsend @officialadrianmole
📖 Lisey's Story - Stephen King

I have a couple of books and some manga on the go at the minute that will take me through to 2026 🤟

I posted a reel with all the 83 books I'd read through the year yesterday, go check it out!

Have you read any of these? What are your thoughts?

Have you been reading anything good this month?

Happy New Year everyone 🎉
