Gaming is not the point here….

The point is that I used to feel guilty for doing anything after the kids went to bed that did not look productive,

Because there is always another thing to sort when you’re an entrepreneurial dad and run a business

Another email to send, client message to respond to,
Another plan to sort, or Another way you could be “getting ahead.”

And I guess I started believing a good provider should use every spare hour to do more,

So Somewhere along the way, being productive became how I proved I was doing enough to the ones I loved and to myself aswell,

But I have tried that version of it.

I have sat at the laptop every night, worked on things that could have waited,

then wondered why I woke up still carrying yesterday stresses or

getting frustrated when I’m not further ahead in the day by 9am

Gaming is just one thing of mine that helps me stop being needed for a minute,

It does not replace time with my family
And It happens after the day is done.

when I give myself that space to do things I enjoy doing, I have a clearer head and more patience the next day for every one around me

Including all areas of my life,

You do not need to game,

But you do need something that is not work, not another job and not another way to prove you are doing enough for your family

As we get closer and closer to launching Paternal, we just wanted to take a moment to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way.

The feedback, messages and encouragement we’ve received have genuinely been incredible. And every time we get a DM from someone saying “this is exactly what’s been missing” or thanking us for creating something for dads and birth partners, it reminds us why we started this in the first place.

Because this isn’t just an app we’re building for dads and birth partners — we want to build it with them.

Our goal is for Paternal to be community-led. As the app grows, so will it. Future updates, features and improvements will be shaped by what you tell us you need, what you find useful and, most importantly, what will help you feel more informed, involved and prepared to support your partner.

We’re only at the beginning, but we’re so excited for what’s ahead.

Being a dad in your 30s will often mean giving up the things you once enjoyed….

And most of the time, you do it without even thinking about it You just quietly stop.

Because there’s a business to build, a family to show up for, a career to progress, and somewhere in all of that

the things that were just for you get dropped off the list first.

But if you’re a dad in your 30s who still plays Xbox after the kids go to bed, you’re not the exception You’re actually the average.

As of a 2026 study by the ESA, the average gamer is now 37 years old

So It’s not a kids’ hobby It never really was.

I still play probably not as much And I’ll be honest it gets met with criticism.

That it’s something grown men shouldn’t do….
That it sends the wrong message,
That there are better uses of the time.

Here’s why I don’t agree with any of that…

When the kids are in bed and the day is done, my brain can’t and doesn’t just switch off sometimes

If I sit in silence, I’ve got ten thousand thoughts running at once.

The business. The billsx The things I didn’t get done.

Gaming gives me somewhere to put my head that isn’t any of that, It’s my outlet and My version of switching off.

But there’s another reason I keep coming back to it.

It reminds me of playing Tomb Raider with my dad, Sat next to him on the sofa as a 6 year old

Just the two of us trying to get past the time trials

And I’m never getting that time back, He’s not here anymore But when I pick up a controller, I’m back in that room for a minute with my dad

And that matters to me more than I can really explain to any one,

We need to stop telling dads it’s okay to give up every small thing they enjoy, You’re allowed to have an outlet,

You’re allowed to have something that’s just yours that you enjoy

Not because you’ve earned it as a reward, but because you’re a person And people need space to breathe.

The best version of you isn’t the one who sacrifices everything

It’s the one who knows how to refuel.

When you’re a dad with limited time with your children, you learn quickly that time cannot be wasted.

My summer parenting week was not about filling every minute with expensive activities. It was about making our time structured, meaningful, and highly communicative.

Having a plan. Being fully present. Talking in the car. Eating meals together. Asking questions. Listening to the answers. Creating memories while also giving them the consistency and security every child deserves.

Limited time does not make you a limited father.

It means you have to become more intentional with every hour you are given.

So, if you’re a dad who has limited time with his children, this is the place for you.

A place for fathers who refuse to disappear.
A place for fathers who keep showing up.
A place for fathers who understand that being present is about more than simply being in the same room.

You are not alone here.

Ok, I’ll admit it… getting excited over a nappy bag is a bit sad 😂

But honestly, the other one frustrated the hell out of me, so this feels like a proper upgrade.

And full transparency… before I bought it, I messaged them to say it looked really good. They ended up offering to send me one for free if I shared it on my story.

I’ve been coming to DadSpace since the very first session over 3 and a half years ago. From day one, it felt like a truly safe space to talk — and that support has been so valuable, not just for me, but for so many dads.

So much so, I’m now proud to be hosting our very first Dad & Kids Walk & Talk in Mote Park!

This one’s for all dads — whether you’ve got a baby in a pram, a toddler or kids full of energy. We’ve mapped out a super pram-friendly route, so everyone can join in.
