WHO ATE THE GIZZARD? 🇳🇬 FILM LAB AFRICA

What a rewarding day at British Council Nigeria's Film Lab Africa 'Taboo' showcase at EbonyLife Place London!

Seven writers and seven producers presented world-class storytelling, rooted in Nigerian cultural specificity yet exploring universal human experiences.

⚰️ They Will Teach You Silence offered a moving encounter with Igala traditions, masquerade, suicide and the complexities of grief.

🤰🏿 Hysteria was psychologically taut, exploring fibroids, miscarriage and the pressures surrounding women's reproductive health.
A story with powerful international resonance.

🧒🏿 ỌMỌRÓGÙN questioned masculinity and gender expectations through the symbolic power of a kitchen implement.

📿 âzèn! / Witch examined Edo beliefs, witchcraft accusations and discrimination surrounding #vitiligo.

🩸Generation to Generation confronted the devastating moral dilemmas of child soldiering, while Something in the Blood challenged cultural stereotypes.

Then came Where Is the Gizzard?

A childhood delicacy growing up in Bristol, fiery gizzards connected me to Nigerian foodways and converted my parents' English friends into fifth quarter eaters.

In the short film, a gizzard becomes a symbol of patriarchal privilege. Reserved for the male head of household, its consumption by a girl challenges inherited authority.

Food as social symbol.
Food as narrative transgression.
Food as advocacy for women's agency and changing gender roles.

It brought an exciting evolution of Gastroactivism Filmmaking™ into focus: extending my methodology beyond documentary into narrative storytelling.

Meeting producer Damilola Kehinde and other emerging filmmakers reinforced my interest in developing stories from conception through production, not simply curating completed films.

What a privilege to encounter this younger generation of storytellers.

These are filmmakers to watch, champion and support.

This is the year I bloom.

In 2021, I moved from Port Harcourt to Lagos to pursue a career in screenwriting. I had been here in 2018 and 2019 and couldn’t break into the industry, so you’d think I was crazy for coming back. In fact, I was told that I should be grateful for what I had. But a part of me wanted more. A part of me knew I could be more. And I believed I could be more.

The early years when I came to Lagos were tough. I spent a lot of time learning the craft, writing, rewriting, and trusting that my work would eventually speak for me, and it did.

This year, I applied to the British Council Film Lab Africa writing program and as you know, I am one of 35 writers selected to be part of the program.

After the writing program, 7 brilliant stories were selected from the pool of stories developed in the program to be part of an anthology series.

I was then appointed story editor for the series.

I worked closely with the writers and the producers to ensure the integrity of the stories is maintained and the creative vision is translated on screen.

Now after weeks of hardwork, writing, story editing, producing; I dare say it is time to feast.

Thank you to the @ngbritisharts for putting this week together to showcase the work that these producers and writers have created; and to their delivery partners @ebonylifecreativeacademy and @iconicsteps … thank you.

P.S. Thank you for all the love on my birthday! I’m out of the office and will respond when I’m back. (Read that like a LinkedIn post 😄)

Kicking off a series on mentorship this week. First up - A moment that captured it perfectly.

Phebe Atsemude hosted Revamp with a grace and confidence that set the tone before a single speaker took the mic. The room felt her energy from the first minute, and it never let up.

Mentorship isn't always a formal lesson. Sometimes it's simply a girl watching someone host a room with quiet command and thinking, "I could do that too."
