Happy Thanksgiving

Grateful for the people around me. My family, the ones who accept me exactly as I am, and the ones who genuinely care.

Grateful too for the things that took me longer to value: a settled nervous system, a future I’m actually looking forward to, and a bit of peace on the inside.

Life has its own way of teaching you. Listen when it taps you on the shoulder, because if you don’t, it’ll keep punching you in the face until you do. I’m listening now, and I’m better for it.

Wishing you all a good one. Send the love to your people!

KL Tower BASE Event 🇲🇾

I’ve been to this event a few times over the years. This one was different, but also very much the same…

205 jumpers from 38 countries, 2,762 jumps in 3 days. With that many people and a wide range of experience levels, it could easily have gone another way. Instead there were only a few minor injuries, and a lot of jumpers helping each other and staying within their limits. That’s what makes an event like this work.

For me it was a whistle stop trip: a 5 day turnaround, long-haul flights and a 15 hour time difference. 22 jumps, and worth every hour of travel.

Thank you @kltowermalaysia for letting us use the tower, great meeting some old friends again and making new ones. Finally huge thanks to @rockwellwatches for sending me off to work; It’s a hard job, but someone has to do it 🤘🏻

August Recap (08/12)

I’m lying here at the end of it, sick as a dog, knowing it was a good one!

Flew home from Europe and got straight back to jumping off the Chief with old friends who came to visit. Search & Rescue callouts, and met some of the new potential SAR recruits. Helped @the.cookie.dror at the PNE and deliver cookies when it didn’t go to plan. Skydiving for fun and for work @whistlerskydive doing tandems & I love it. A Wear White event down in Vancouver. Played rugby for the Fire Dept and we got new vehicles at the Flynn residence.

Somewhere in the last few years, I lost myself. This year I found myself again, cliche AF I know…. The confident paratrooper is back the one who’s self-sufficient, self-reliant, and doesn’t need your approval to sleep at night. I know that rubs some people the wrong way and good; we are different!

One of the lines we had to recite in the Paras was “I ask nothing from those who gave nothing”

I’ve learned to set boundaries. Relationships are give and take and today’s world needs to learn this, I show up for the people who show up for me, and I’ve stopped pouring into the ones who only take. If there’s silence between us, we both already know why... I’m not angry and when you want to apologize my door will always be open. I won’t defend myself against the stories being told, because the truth has a way of surfacing on its own. When it does, you’ll find me exactly where I’ve always been: moving forward, heart on my sleeve, still heading to the top and taking people with me.

August has always been my hardest month. It carries the anniversary of losing a friend on my first deployment to Afghanistan in 2006. For the first time in 20 years, it didn’t swallow me whole, and I put that down to the work I’ve done this year and last year with EMDR, advanced neurofeedback and TMS therapy. I’ve always said they taught us how to go to war; They never taught us how to come home… but these systems have.

20 years later, I’m home, I’m happy and have a great future

July Recap(7/12)

Somewhere between the coffee and exits, I got myself back...

I spent the month cutting noise instead of chasing it. Trimmed the loose ends; the people who only surface when they need something, and started giving time back to the ones who call just to call. The ride gets a lot lighter once you stop carrying people who were never really in your corner.

It started at BC Place, working Switzerland vs Algeria game at the World Cup. Then a few more tandem skydives, taking someone on their first jump is so rewarding. Then the Fire Dept vacation kicked in and I disappeared into Europe to be a BASE bum for a month. Jump, pack, eat, sleep, repeat.

Italy, Switzerland, France, the UK. Hiked a lot, threw myself into canyons, flew through couloirs and waterfalls, buzzed a coffee shop, drank far too much coffee and ate my bodyweight in pasta. Sat across the table from old friends I hadn’t seen in over a decade, and made a few new ones who’ll probably be around for the next ten.

I also walked down from five jumps. No footage, no story, no regret. The sport keeps you honest, the ego wants to jump, but walking down because you don’t feel it or conditions are shit is the skill that keeps you around long enough to keep jumping.

My only advice to the new guys this trip: “if you’re going in, go in like a man and don’t scream; I’ll be watching the footage.” Dark humour earns its place up here…

A hard year behind me, and I feel reset, refreshed, lighter and back to normal; and somehow happier than normal’s ever been…

Thanks to @tdfireacademy & @rockwellwatches for believing my vision for this trip and being in my corner to make it happen. And thank you to someone who is back home and was happy for me to go on this wild adventure, having someone in your corner no matter what is what this is all about 🤍 @dror_barnea

Yesterday I took a gondola to the rare air above the most Austrian corner of Italy, and watched some strange birds fly fast!

The more time I spend following this crowd around the more respect, love and awe I have for the BASE community. One day soon enough you will be able to read all about it.
