🪻Hydrangea🪻is the first song from my cycle “Songs of Loss and Longing”. It sets a gorgeous text by @mihokinnas :

I wanted to love you
without regrets, without sorrow
Flowers will return, their colors
deep blue
but you are not here anymore
I didn’t know your kindness until
hydrangea swayed in the rain.

Another thank you to the incredible soprano @kaylyntaylorbaldwin and pianist @mary_elizabeth_tan for bringing my music to life, and to @cincysong and @officialnats for commissioning the song!

A very long but rewarding day filled with tons and tons of music! 🎼

What a crazy time for my very first SCNATS singing competition… I went in fully just for the experience but ultimately I placed somehow?!? I’m honored to place in the MT Category as well as win in the Commercial Music category for my room and what an honor it was to perform that in the Honors Recital!

I can’t wait to see what regionals has in store for me next! Thank you to my voice teacher Valerie MacPhail for pushing me to do this big opportunity and to all of my friends who were right alongside me for the adventure! 🎵

GET READY WITH US 💄✨

Such a fun day at @maccosmetics with the girls, prepping for the main event! Huge thank you to @acca143 and the entire team at the @westfieldgar for an amazing day filled with memories to last a lifetime. 😊♥️

As an artist, I’ve always enjoyed performing and connecting with others through music. It has taken me all over the world, and I’m grateful for all that I’ve achieved. But as an educator, there is no greater joy or privilege than to watch those you mentor grow confidently into their own. Thank you for trusting my guidance…even if it takes a little convincing at times 🫪😑😂…because I know just how special each of you are. Keep shining.✨

See you all soon! 🍂

Can a song be a historical document?

We usually think of historical documents as letters, photographs, archives or books.

But what about a song?

A song can tell us how people imagined their nation, how they understood belonging, which languages they valued, and which histories they wanted to remember.

And sometimes, which histories they preferred to forget.

In my research on Latin American art song, I have explored songs as moving mirrors of identity—places where history, poetry, memory and cultural values meet.

Because songs don’t simply reflect the societies that produce them. They can also participate in shaping how those societies imagine themselves.

So the next time you listen to a song, try asking a different question:

Not only, “Is this beautiful?”

But also, “What can this music tell me about the world in which it was created?”

What song do you think tells an important story about your country or culture?

Tell me in the comments. And follow me if you want to discover the histories hidden in Latin American and Iberian art song.

What a wonderful evening at the National Opera Center in New York City! Today I presented a lecture and master class on Latin American and Spanish art song, working with talented singers who traveled from Knoxville, Tennessee, Boston, and other parts of the United States to participate.

It was a joy to explore this repertoire together and hear each singer bring their own voice and interpretation to these songs. Sharing this music and watching people connect with it is what makes this work so meaningful to me.

Thank you to the New York Singing Teachers Association for the invitation, to the singers for their artistry and commitment, and to everyone who joined us in the audience. I’m leaving with gratitude for the music, the conversations, and the connections we made tonight.
