Here, I shared the story behind
Moonlight Shakers, a song born from an unexpected moment of connection.

After a gig, I was riding in an Uber home with my maracas in the backseat, jamming along to the Afrobeats track my driver was playing on his stereo, with the sub turned up. At a red light, another car pulled up beside us with the windows down, and everyone in the packed car was waving and pumping their arms to our music!

In the moment, I tossed one of my maracas through the open window. A passenger in the other car excitedly caught it and started shaking along to the beat. When the light turned green, the car took off, with the passenger still waving the maraca out the window!

I knew I had to turn that moment into a song, and that’s how Moonlight Shakers was born 🪇

After creating the instrumental groove first, I shared this story with vocalist @officialshimmerjohnson and had the honour of collaborating with her on the melody and lyrics.

Funny how a random moment with strangers can turn into a song!

Moonlight Shakers is currently on most streaming platforms via @deltarecordings, if you’d like to give it a listen

Thank you, @thebloomproject.ca, for creating space for us to share ideas at CReaTe Lab at the University of Victoria during @breakoutwest
