The truth is, I wasn’t ready for the race. And I damn sure wasn’t ready to make this post.

Talon and I ran the worst race of our four seasons together in Boston. 1:04:42. Several minutes slower than what we’ve proven we’re capable of.

*** And the hardest part to admit? I’d already lost the race before we crossed the starting line.

I was a complete head case going into Boston. I hadn’t raced since Dallas last year, my training had slipped in the weeks leading up, and all I could think about was the pain, the suffering, and whether I’d done enough.

Something else I’ve realized: community matters. In Spain, I trained alongside absolute animals every day. People who pushed me, challenged me, and made me better. Back in Texas, I’ve largely been doing it alone. Same work, different environment. And it shows.

Of course, there’s life. I’m a husband, a father, and a business owner. I don’t get paid to race, and I don’t have two hours a day to train. Those aren’t excuses. They’re realities. But the clock doesn’t care.

And yes, those infamous Boston carpets were brutal. We came into the sled on pace and left dead last. But the carpet didn’t beat us. What happened afterward did.

Watching Talon, a guy I look up to for strength, get stopped by that sled shook me. From there, everything unraveled. We normally run the farmer’s carry. This time, we both walked.

We didn’t just lose four minutes. We lost our heads.

And that’s why I didn’t want to post this.

I was embarrassed. I talk a big game. I train hard. I hold myself to high standards. And this time, I fell short.

But you know what’s more embarrassing than losing? Hiding from it.

It’s easy to post the PRs and victories. It’s harder to own the failures. But that’s where the growth happens.

Boston reminded me that you can be physically capable and still defeat yourself mentally before the race even starts.

I just finished an eight-mile run, I’ve still got work to do in the gym, and I’ve got roughly 40 days until Dallas.

Boston is behind us. The lesson isn’t.

On to Dallas. Let’s fucking go.

Sustained effort workouts are a key ingredient to my Hyrox prep. It’s not all about pushing to your threshold and beyond and puking in a corner (@officialtalonsmith ). A great way to build your tolerance and development at your threshold is to stay just below it for an extended period of time. Here’s a great workout you can try that my boy @officialtalonsmith cooked up for me! 75 Minuntes Continuous Effort
2K Run @ controlled effort 40 DB Lunges 200m Float 1k Run @ controlled effort 20 DB Hang Cleans 33 Thrusters 400m Float Straight back to the top!! #hyrox #hybridathlete #dadbod #dadfitness #hyroxusa

After 53 races, you learn a thing or two about efficiency. One mistake I see people make is that they over stride and only push off the lead leg. This can really blow you up. If you train over striding on lunges and can maintain it, great, but if you find yourself struggling with the lunges, try taking a more balanced and natural step, drop your center of gravity, keep your core right, breathe and keep moving. Stay controlled, stay consistent and you’ll knock em out. #Hyrox #Fitness #Gym #Workout #FortWorth

Had a little setback earlier this week. I came down with a fever, chills, aches, the whole nine yards. But after 4 days off we got right back to it. Started with an easy session and then hit two quality days back to back. Probably not the smartest idea, but I made sure this day had no running involved. Workout prescription:
8 rounds of 4 minutes Ski Erg into 2 minutes of Station Work. Stations were Sled Push, Sandbag Lunges, Wall Balls, BBJs. I hate skiing that much, but @officialtalonsmith doesn’t seem to care. 58:00 Pro Solo is the goal! Let’s get after it!

Keep showing up. It’s one of the biggest factors in success. 20 World Championship qualifiers came out of this gym since 2021, and none of them got there in a month. One brick at a time. I realized I never formally introduced myself. I just kind of started posting one day without much context. So here’s a small intro to who I am. Enjoy!
