The Fulton Library had a special visitor!
This “Flat Benjamin Franklin” started in a fifth grade class in San Jose, CA, and has been traveling by mail to all 50 states.

He made his way to Utah Valley University via:
💌 University of Pennsylvania @upennlib
💌 University of Missouri @mizzou.libraries
💌 Yale University @basslibrary
💌 Rice University @fondrenlibrary

We had fun showing Ben all around the library and campus... swipe to read more➡️

Flat Benjamin Franklin visited the fourth and fifth floors of the library to read biographies about himself, and copies of his own “Poor Richard’s Almanack.” This almanac was a yearly pamphlet that predicted weather and calendar data, accompanied by puzzles and short proverbs.

Benjamin Franklin was the inventor of the public library. His concept allowed patrons to subscribe for access to a community collection of books. We thought he’d like to see just how much his invention has evolved: today, UVU’s library lends everything from books to anatomy models to technology—for free!

Ben’s next stop was the gem of Utah Valley University: Roots of Knowledge. This expansive, stained-glass gallery features 80 panels with 40,000+ pieces of glass, depicting a story of human achievement and the pursuit of learning through time.

Benjamin Franklin can be found in Roots of Knowledge panel Q3, shown wearing his own invention of bifocals, sitting with John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Depicted next to him is a kite, representing his experiment hypothesizing that lightning is a form of electricity.

Flat Ben got to see UVU’s famous Hall of Flags, featuring national flags from across the globe. Ben is pictured here with the French flag because he was the U.S.’ first foreign ambassador to France. He was responsible for garnering financial support from the French during the American Revolution.

In the Pope Science Building, we showed Benjamin Franklin the Foucault Pendulum. Franklin had an interest in many subjects, including science—so we thought he’d be fascinated by this installation. The Foucault Pendulum, invented in 1851, swings on a constant plane as the earth rotates, tapping over small wooden pegs as it moves.

Somewhere on the shore, a little girl was throwing starfish back into the ocean—one by one.
Someone told her, “There are too many… you won’t make a difference.”
She picked up another starfish, smiled, and said, “I made a difference to this one.”

At Seabroom, we believe in this✨
Small actions may seem tiny… but together, they create waves of change 🌊
