Day 22
11 km
440 m elevation gain
I had a late start and the day turned out to be uncharacteristically hot, especially on the unforgiving stony terrain. But I got three peaks under the belt, and the best surprise was a chance meet-up on St James Peak with @offroadwithalex and his lovely girlfriend, Eden. Alexis has just completed a massively impressive cycle ride through Africa from France all the way to Cape Town. What a legend!!! Hopefully, we’ll do a peak or two together soon.

Day 9: Vic Falls → Kazungula (🇿🇼🇿🇲🇧🇼)
Triple country day! One of those days that feels like a week.

We left Vic Falls and crossed back into Zambia, straight into the roadside life we had fallen in love with on day one. Candy shops, workshops, vegetable stands, women balancing impossible loads on their heads, everyone busy, waving as we passed.

33km in, we saw a sign for a lodge and went looking for coffee. Turned left too early and ended up on a muddy track through a small village instead. No lodge, just a few men fishing in the Zambezi river with plastic bottle traps filled with nsima. Simple, clever, efficient.

Village kids started following us, running through puddles, jumping into our riding shots, laughing at the photos of themselves, helping us push the bikes through mud & sand.

50m after saying goodbye, we found the actual lodge entrance. Big gates, luxury riverside lodge, fancy cappuccinos overlooking the same river we had just stood next to in the mud. Same river, completely different worlds.

Later the sky opened and we got hit by a proper downpour 🌧️ Somehow you don’t really mind getting soaked here, it kinda feels like a reset. The dust disappears, the air cools & everything smells alive again.

We met Alexis, a French bikepacker who has been on the road for 8 months, rode together for a while, then continued towards Kazungula Bridge, where Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Botswana meet.

Another border crossing, passport stamped, & suddenly we were in Botswana 🇧🇼 a first for both of us!

Part III of VI - Albania. After crossing into Albania, @faan__alt and I ferried across Komani lake. During the Ferry we ran into a bikepacker we had met in Prizren @offroadwithalex. A few mechanicals and some water poisoning caused a few change of plans but also put us on the path of Graham and @fra_rides who we would meet up with on and off in the coming weeks.
Fannie and I instantly fell in love with the people and the places of Albania. The climbs are long and steep, the mountains loom large, the sun's rays are strong and food grows everywhere by the roadside. We definitely spent more time than expected picking grapes, figs, plums, blackberries, apples and pears.

This was also, for both of us, our first week logging over 10,000m of elevation on our bikes, over 540km. On our last night, we got to sleep on a farm nestled over 2000m in the mountains and everything we ate there was raised, grown and prepared on the farm (meat, cheese, wine, blueberry juice, vegetables).

It's been months and it still feels like a dream.
