Project Spotlight: Connecting kids to mangroves 🌳 #myoceanbackyard Mangrove forests safeguard coastlines, provide habitat, are an important blue carbon sink. In Ghana, they are under threat from logging and degradation. Supported by the National Geographic Society’s Explorer-Educator Exchange Program, we partnered with the Future Ocean Leaders Academy @folagh to connect students to the ocean conservation issues of Ghana through a learning animation series called My Ocean Backyard. The first episode of #myoceanbackyard spotlights mangroves - showcasing the local threats and simple solutions. After watching and discussing the animation, @folagh brought students to their backyard mangrove forest to participate in restoration and experience the magic of Ghanaʻs mangroves - fostering connection to place and empowering them with the skills to be part of the solution.
