On 31 July, Shubbak took over Friday Late at V&A South Kensington to mark fifteen years of artistic exchange, collective imagination and Arab and SWANA cultural presence across the UK.

Across the museum, artists working across performance, music, installation, fashion, food, conversation and digital practice approached the body as a site of memory, resistance, pleasure, knowledge sharing and possibility.

From synths from Syria and a DJ set from Sudan, to an imagined ancestors from Iran, a counter-catwalk catwalk, a feast of Levantine baking and a VR ritual against the evil eye, and an entire universe birthed from the natural archive of a single seed, the evening brought together practices that moved across disciplines, geographies and generations.

Co-curated by Shubbak and the V&A, the takeover offered a space to celebrate fifteen years of work while imagining what might come next.

A very belated thank you to all the dancers, musicians, light particles and waves that made Basket of Light round 5 so special this year ❤️‍🔥

As the summer wanes we still can’t get the solstice out of our eyes and ears. That little flash of idyll cast a beautiful light over the last few months of sun and it’s been a touch to see you all out there ever since.

Now then. Basket of Light is looking for a new home. We need three things. Seclusion, a place to swim, and enough space to dance until the sun comes back. Can you help us?

Basma is the host of Khartoum Arrivals on NTS Radio and the co-host of radio show and record label Hear, Sense and Feel. Basma’s sets are inspired by wedding anthems and eclectic folk of Sudan, the Sahel and the Horn of Africa, and beyond and she will be bringing this to Voices.

Habibti Nation founder LUMA is starting the day off chatting about all things Habibti Nation and beyond as well as playing the percussive off kilter SWANA sounds she is known for. She will be hosting today’s takeover and interviewing all guests.

LUMA is a British-Iraqi DJ, radio host, and nightlife curator shaped by her Arabic heritage and London roots. Her high-energy, percussion-driven sets fuse UK and global underground sounds with heavy bass and Arabic samples, moving fluidly across genres and tempos. She has a residency on Sister Midnight FM with my show ‘From Lewisham to Baghdad’, spotlighting these sounds. She has played at countless UK music institutions including Glastonbury Festival, fabric, The Jazz Cafe, the Royal Albert Hall, the V&A, and internationally from Berlin to Cairo and Bethlehem to Tokyo and beyond. She is the founder of Habibti Nation and through this platform, she curates sold out community focused club nights, festival takeovers and runs DJ workshops for under represented groups

Layal is an Egyptian artist based in London whose music is a form of self-expression before anything else. It’s how she documents her inner world—what she’s feeling, questioning, or holding onto. Rooted in the sounds of Cairo and shaped by a wide range of global influences, her work resists easy categorisation, blending instruments and genres in a way that feels instinctive rather than strategic. She’s performed at festivals like Wireless and Latitude, venues such as The Blues Kitchen, The Jazz Cafe & Islington Assembly Hall with support from B
