𝐍𝐄𝐖 @asian.cha 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 | Tiffany Troy speaks with brenda Lin about her essay collection, 𝑈𝑛𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑇ℎ𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑠: 𝐸𝑠𝑠𝑎𝑦𝑠 𝑜𝑛 𝐼𝑛ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 (The Ohio State University Press, 2026), and the experiences that shaped it. Lin reflects on returning to Taiwan after twenty years, becoming a mother, and finding inspiration in her own mother’s collection of traditional textiles.

/ I returned to Taiwan a mother of three children, after a twenty-year absence, and this book, 𝑈𝑛𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑇ℎ𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑠, is about the process of that homecoming. It is also about motherhood and inheritance, which is another way of framing what it means to be a daughter, an adult child of ageing parents. It felt, in many ways, like I was being pulled back home by this umbilical cord, back to my mother and back towards Taiwan.

Because my parents are in the children’s apparel business, my mother became a children’s textile collector, and over the years, I have worked with her on several books about her collection. After I returned to Taiwan, I started doing some archival work for her collection. Every essay title is accompanied by a Chinese character that has the radical 糸. Characters with this radical indicate that the word has something to do with thread or silk. These characters and my mother’s textile collection serve as the central theme and metaphor for all the essays. The character 繫, in the title essay, means to connect, to tie (the radical is on the bottom of the character). I wanted to begin the collection with this image of ties that simultaneously pull us close and hurl us outward; ties that become knots and ties that loosen and unravel. /

“Part memoir, part ekphrasis, and part philosophical deep-dive into the folly of warfare, Picasso’s Door: Reflections on Life, Death, and Guernica is a kaleidoscopically inventive work of creative nonfiction. At once tender and rigorous, McDonough’s prose reaches across history, urging us to resist the impulse to look away from the suffering by that permeates our daily lives.” —Chris Vanjonack

#law #teaching from original U.S. Constitution; hey, somebody should check it out 📖😉. Court tomorrow in Struthers Ohio at 2:30pm; time to shut em down! Seriously, if I successfully sue them for all they have, the first thing I am going to do is update that court men’s restroom! It looks like hell, and like the one that they wrongfully confined me with at the Mahoning County Jail ,😒. #civilrights #legalrights #humanrights They abused and tortured my sorry 🫏 🤷🏻‍♂️. God pulled me through just fine without ANY real help though. Undue resistance is difficult, but it will still strengthen you 🏋🏻❤️✝️

📣 EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT 📣

Join us for an evening celebrating trans activism and trans joy amid adversity with the launch of Gina Gwenffrewi's new book: J.K. Rowling and the Anti-trans Panic!

In this talk, Edinburgh University lecturer and cherished friend of the bookshop, Gwenffrewi will share her thoughts on J.K. Rowling's apparent radicalization as an anti-trans activist and the social and political factors in the UK that enabled it.

Gwenffrewi beautifully captures the light and dark of being out as trans in the city that—if it can fairly be called ground zero for anti-trans fervor—also embodies liberatory possibilities for trans people worldwide.

Tuesday 13th October at 6.30pm - see you there! Noor holding up a copy of JK Rowling and the anti-trans panic.

Make it spectacular. Inside, outside, don't save your light. Collaborate with beauty around you. Love hard. It isn't easy. But what is worse is not going all in and never knowing.

Friends, this summer I had an extraordinary conversation with Lynette D’Amico, author of Men I Hate: A Memoir in Essays. We have never met in person (not yet!), but I feel such literary kinship with and deep admiration for both the writer and the work.

Now you can eavesdrop on all we talked about, thanks to Assay: A Journal of Nonfiction Studies!

Thank you, Lynette, for all your insight and for this remarkable, feminist, queer, tender, and thought-provoking debut! ❤️📚🏳️‍🌈
