Today we said goodbye to a controversial man, a legend, an anarchist and above all, a beautiful fool: Philippe Gaulier.

I had a complicated relationship with this man. As a teacher, I found him confusing. Sometimes he was a clear-eyed, sharp-tongued critic with a profound understanding of stagecraft and human expression. Other times he was a crotchety old man with a mean streak. And then sometimes times he was just a mischievous little gremlin. That is my favourite Philippe. He had playfulness pouring out of him at all times.

His attention, his instruction and his presence in the classroom was sought by many. When he walked into a room, everyone sat at attention and began to take the art of being silly very, very seriously. To have the full beam of his focus land upon you never stopped feeling exciting and important. However, at the end of the day, the man himself was only one small piece of the puzzle. The whole picture, what was for me, life-altering in the best way possible, was what he built. That school, the people who teach there and the students who flock there to try to learn to be beautiful— that’s what it was all about.

I’ll be forever grateful to Gaulier for building a place that changed my life. I found community, fulfilment and a creative home in Etampes and within clowning. I made the bit that would become MOTORBOAT within the first week at clown school, and I haven’t stopped creating since. I’ll think of him every time I do a big beautiful flop onstage. And I’ll wonder if he’s mad that I didn’t “get in a bin and stay there forever.”

Vale Phillippe

PS I’m still a Monster 😈

I had total fun doing Paulette in edinburgh. My thanks go out to everyone who came to the show and every vector who spread word of mouth like a good disease. 1000+ people saw the show. I am floored.

I owe my life to the unstoppable @ohjoewebster who among other magic tricks can make an audience materialize out of thin air.

I got to meet and spend time with many people who I’m fond of. These were the best moments of the festival bc they cut through the noise. My gas tank is empty but there is wind in my damn sails 🤘
