Every comeback has a name.

Our feature this week is Maha Ali from Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Challenge:
Three weeks before I sat for my Level 1 exam, my family experienced an unexpected loss. My 49-year-old cousin passed in his sleep. He had no prior medical conditions. He was a scuba instructor. Medically, nothing made sense.

The loss of a family member while in medical school is terrifying because school doesn’t stop, but your world does. I decided to keep pushing. I mean, that’s what you’re told you’re supposed to do: compartmentalize and keep studying.

Unfortunately for me, that didn’t work. I ended up not passing Level 1.

How I Overcame:
I was shattered the first few days after getting my results. But I was also more determined to prove to myself that I was smarter and stronger than before.

There was a three-week gap between my first attempt and the score release. I used that time to heal. I stopped compartmentalizing. I let myself be a person with feelings. I spent time with family and friends. I learned how to put myself back together again.

After I received my scores, I leaned on my community: my parents, siblings, mentors, and friends. I knew I couldn’t do this alone. I reached out to clinical professors for advice, worked in study groups, and prioritized balance.

For the last month leading up to my retake, I only did practice questions. I wrote down anything I missed and reviewed it at the end of the day. I started working out, eating better, and learning my limits. I didn’t push myself to exhaustion physically or emotionally. I listened to my body.

When I retook the exam, I felt better. And my scores showed it.

Tips from Maha:
Being a medical student isn’t just about always passing. It’s about learning to fail and not giving up.

The best students are the ones who persevere and are willing to try and try again.

Remember that you’re human. Know your limits.

Taking a step back and touching grass is okay.

There’s no need to be superhuman. Just be you.

Failure isn’t the end. It’s just the beginning.
