POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Had the loveliest time in Tuscany as part of my sister’s early birthday celebrations. A beautiful setting and good company. Lots of relaxing, tasty food, and a pleasing amount of book chat. It was great to be able to just stop for a few days and take life at a slower pace. I also enjoyed exploring the small towns nearby - we had a lovely dinner in Marciano della Chiana, and a wander and lunch in Lucignano. Would definitely like to do more of this.

Spent some time with this beautiful @tishmurtha book published by @britishculturearchive this morning. Although I’ve seen most of the images before, I discover something new each time I turn a page. The people in the photographs still commune the joy, struggle, rage and beauty of their lives through their eyes and the empathic gaze of Tish Murtha’s lens. Two other things that make this collection something to treasure: 1) words that help to frame the photos: Tish’s stunning Youth Unemployment essay, Ella’s tender, heartfelt intro and Jen Corcoran’s @ohnococo_ powerful, incisive essay; 2) The design and quality of the paper and binding, you can feel the weight of this book both physically and emotionally. Congrats, all 👏🏽

Fabulous afternoon @balticgateshead for a preview of the new @tishmurtha and @kuba_ryniewicz exhibition Close to Home. Big congrats to @niomifairweather and the Baltic team. I took some pics but they do not do justice to the scale and depth of the work on display, so I urge you to get along to see this in person if you can. It’s on till April 2027 and is free entry. Also got to see the new Tish Murtha book Vandalism on a Grand Scale from @britishculturearchive, which is absolutely stunning. And lovely catching up with @ellamurtha @ohnococo_ @browneileenmurtha @angeslaven @hollie.galloway @mrpaulwright @joannecoates_

Opening today: Tish Murtha & Kuba Ryniewicz “Close to Home” exhibition at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art

Driven by a commitment to document the impact of deindustrialisation on working class communities in Northeast England in the 1970s and 1980s, Tish Murtha used her camera to expose societal inequality. As seen in the Modern Films documentary TISH, the photographer was committed to representation, equality and real life impact.

Nascondino was a very important episode of my life. I remember every single moment of producing this film with so much love and gratitude. It added layers of knowledge and beauty to my existence. It was a long time ago, but for what I am still witnessing is a Forever film ❤️

Gaetano Di Vaio, you would have eaten them alive…I miss you.

For years, my focus was simple. I just wanted my mam’s work to get the recognition it deserved. I poured so much of myself into that goal that I never stopped to think about what it might feel like if it actually happened.
Now that it has, it’s very complicated. Seeing her work celebrated is wonderful, but alongside the pride, there’s also a deep sadness that she isn't here to see it, which I’m still trying to come to terms with.
After the books went out of print, people kept asking if I’d ever make another one. For a long time, I just wasn’t ready. I needed some distance before I could return to the work in a way that felt right. But the requests never stopped and it was always Youth Unemployment that people wanted. So I’m bringing it back. In a new format, with a team I trust and respect because this body of work is too important to stay out of print. It deserves to reach new eyes, and to be seen again by anyone ready to experience it differently.
The original book was what first caught the attention of @britishculturearchive. At first, they just loved the work, but over time, that connection grew into something much deeper. A collaboration that has meant so much to me over the years. When the time came to bring this new edition into the world, there was no one else I wanted to publish it with.

It has been a joy working with our amazing designer, Friederike Huber @fredshub her expert eye, thoughtful layouts, and incredible attention to detail have brought Vandalism on a Grand Scale to life in the most beautiful way.

Huge thanks to my brilliant friend Jen Corcoran @ohnococo_ who is clever, thoughtful, creative and full of heart ❤️ Her essay about my mam’s legacy is beautiful, nuanced, and everything I could have hoped for. I cherish her talent and insight.

Here’s me mam’s favourite photo from the series 'Cops Piss Off', my favourite photo of us together, Glenn in the Window and the new cover. I am completely obsessed with the cover material, it feels sooooo lush and I can’t wait for you all to see it.

Tish Murtha was a phenomenal documentary photographer, overlooked in her lifetime, who dedicated herself to documenting her community in the natural light of their time from the 1970’s till her death in 2013. Tish revealed the humanity that is so often brutally marginalised by political and economic deprivation and her devotion to her work was uncompromsing.
Ella Murtha, Tish’s only child, works equally hard to keep Tish’s portfolio of work present for us all to learn from and together with film makers Paul Sng, Jennifer Corcoran and Holly Galloway, Ella has created a very moving portrait of Tish Murtha’s life and works. I feel so lucky to have been involved in helping Ella tell that story.
The film is available to watch online in the UK and Ireland via Curzon Home Cinema, BFI Player, Sky Store and BBC iPlayer. Don’t miss out on seeing this touching film.
You can also find out more about Tish Murtha and her work at www.tishmurtha.co.uk
If you’re in London, her works are now part of the permanent collections of Tate Britain, the National Portrait Gallery and the Museum of London.

Working-class photographer Tish Murtha captured the impact of Thatcherism on England, but was unable to escape the inequality she exposed.
