Let’s make New Haven the Best City to Start — for makers! 🥫🍯🫙

For makers of consumer packaged foods like @ohshitosauce there are already many state rules they need to follow: Food safety training, inspections, labeling, permits. But on top of these rules, New Haven also requires a catering license that cost hundreds of dollars just to sell a jar!

That’s why as part of Best City to Start, we’re working to pass a Pickle Jar License. Instead of having to get a catering license, New Haven makers simply upload their existing state approvals to ensure they are registered with the City.

✅ Food safety stays strong
✅ Businesses are registered with the City
✅ And we remove an unnecessary, duplicative barrier

On a trip to Ghana in 2019, Kwame Asare was inspired by the essence and rich culture of his birthplace. The warm greetings of Ghanaians, along with the familiar tastes of bold cuisines reignited buried memories of childhood. One constant staple of his favorite waakye dish was shito — a common sauce condiment in Ghana. Upon returning to the U.S., he shared the highlights of his trip, and informed his siblings of an idea that would bring a Ghanaian classic to the American hot sauce and condiment market. Oh, Shito was born!
